Have you not watched “Unforgiven”?
Have not. You’d rank it up there with Tombstone?

I plan on watching Damnation. It’s a series and what I saw of it, was good.
Godless is real good
Hell on Wheels
and of course, Deadwood

Godless is great and it really is beautiful, really giving the setting it's due. Godless made me wish my favorite old westerns could get reboots with nothing changing but the landscape. Imagine how good Lonesome Dove would look with proper setting(s).

Godless would probably be top choice for me, I might even go top series for my top "modern" 3 which doesn't include Sergio Leone and others.

Godless
Deadwood
Lonesome Dove

Tombstone is basically a Marvel movie. Its a fun, entertaining watch but not some all time great.

Couldn't agree more. It's an entertaining popcorn movie, not a Western.

And I'll add Appaloosa as very underrated and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs as greatness, though not exactly a Western.

Tombstone

is very fun to watch. What more do you want from it?

Fewer pretty boys with overly coiffed mustaches pretending to be old west tough guys while posing for the camera and uttering cliched one liners?

Wyatt Earp and Tombstone were originally part of the same project, which split when Kurt Russell wanted to focus on Wyatt’s later career while Costner wanted to do a whole career film.

Regardless of your opinion of Tombstone, Russell had a point since Costner’s film ended up being something like 3.5 hours.

A lot of good ones have been named.

I'll throw in The Devil's Rejects as a modern (in time) western from the perspective of unsympathetic villains.

Ask yourself this. Who are the better actors ?

Clint Eastwood or Kurt Russell ?

Morgan Freeman or Val Kilmer ?

Gene Hackman or Michael Biehn

Frankly, I think this is much closer than you suggest, particularly for these films. Now, for Hackman, the better analogue in Tombstone is Powers Boothe (who is a fantastic, underrated actor).

And, having said all of that - Unforgiven is probably a slightly better "film" from an objective standpoint and Tombstone is the more fun/rewatchable film. I don't think one would be "wrong" ranking either over the other. They're that close for me.

Some good recommendations have been posted. While not technically a Western per se, Longmire is a good series that you may enjoy.
