What’s the best modern westerns to watch? The only one I’ve really watched is Tombstone. Weathers looking shitty again today so it’ll likely be a movie day.

Tombstone is obviously great.

Have you not watched “Unforgiven”?

3:10 to Yuma
Django unchained
Open Range
True Grit

No country for old men
Sicario
Wind river
Hell or high water
...could all be counted as “modern” westerns.

Have not. You’d rank it up there with Tombstone?

If you want a really entertaining one watch ‘Bone Tomahawk.’

It used to be free on Amazon Prime movies. Not sure if it still is.

Richard Jenkins’ performance is vastly underrated. He steals the movie at times.

Throw in "Silverado" for good measure. Good cast, good story line, fast paced.

Unforgiven > Tombstone.

Ask yourself this. Who are the better actors ?

Clint Eastwood or Kurt Russell ?

Morgan Freeman or Val Kilmer ?

Gene Hackman or Michael Biehn ?

Unforgiven is in my Top 10 all-time favorite films... maybe even Top 5.

I know it’s a mini-series but If you haven’t seen Godless on Netflix then you’re missing out on the greatest western of any category imo. It’s fantastic.

Hostiles for me was excellent. Overly violent perhaps but I think it paints a more realistic portrait of the west.

Val Kilmer is a vastly superior actor to Morgan Freeman if you really want to go there.

Logan needs to be on this list.

Honestly, so does Four Brothers. Takes place in Detroit, but it's a Western in every possible theme and trope.

Tombstone

This is probably one of the more overrated westerns. It could easily be called a successful bro western. Most of the acting comes across as caricatures to appeal to the bro-thren viewers, and the actors seem committed to that type of portrayal. Most scenes embrace western cliches. I never got into it the same way many others have because it seems way more Hollywood than authentic.

Top modern westerns include True Grit, The Proposition, 3:10 to Yuma and Unforgiven.

Tombstone is more in the next tier where Django Unchained and Hateful Eight reside.
