If you've ever known fighter pilots or, hell, even attack helicopter pilots, you know this is absolutely true.

Maybe 1 guy would graduate. The guy who knew he was #1, late. He might dance around danger at the end and try to run out the clock. Of course the other hypercompetitive, Type A++ personality cats might put him in danger in order to try to get ahead of him.

But, yeah, there would be shite tons of death if there was a competition for "best fighter pilot/naval aviator". Absolutely.

I remember as a kid thinking Top Gun was one of the baddest arse movies of all time.

Regardless, knowing how the military is about promoting broads I doubt a one is truly in the top pilots yearly.

From my understanding women can make excellent fighter pilots; due to being naturally shorter, they can handle g-forces better (height and weight mean a lot more than gender), so their natural tendency to be shorter actually serves them well. Maverick makes a great pilot (at least in this factor) because he's short and skinny.

Of course, the idea is kind of moot. The likelihood of getting into a close-range, tight turn dogfight is astronomically low with BVR weaponry. Most of the time they never see the plane they're going to shoot at.

It was at the time. Any young folks that didn't see it in it's prime don't understand the hype.

Everybody wanted to fly an F-14 after that movie. I was in kindergarten when it came out, we would line up wooden chairs so we had the Pilot and Rio seats and act like we were flying.

Size has very little to do with it anymore. They use to want short people cause talls guys wouldn't fit. But new fighters don't have that issue.

It's all about your brains, knowledge, reaction time, personality, being able to compartmentalize, training, and you do need to be physically fit.

With... g-forces?

Because size has a LOT to do with g-forces.
