they are also calling it a superior film to the 1986 original.

Well, it has a female Top Gun pilot, so of course they think it's better than the original.

While they acknowledge that the film is "military propaganda" (I shite you not, that's what some of the critics are saying)

I mean, it was a LITTLE (though it was more meant to tell a fun story, the Navy had a surge of people trying to get in - a lot of folks finding out that becoming a Naval aviator took a lot more than attitude and a desire to fly).

More to the point, while the intent of the movie was not really to be propaganda, it definitely got USED in that way.

quote:

According to the US Navy, the box office success of Top Gun saw their recruitment rates balloon by a massive 500% in the year following the original movie’s release. This swell in numbers was due in no small part to the institution’s ability to tap into Top Gun fever when viewers of the movie were still at their most zealous and over-enthusiastic — as they walked out of the multiplex. The U.S. Navy set up recruiting stations outside of movie theaters when Top Gun was released, catching potential recruits as they were left the cinema hyped up by the movie’s dramatic climax. The strategy paid off, as the Navy soon had their highest number of applications in years.

In 1986 there had never been a female pilot accepted into the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) - the first was in 2004 - Becky Calder.

On a side note Japan got its first female combat pilot because she was inspired by the original movie, Misa Matsushima (1st Lt. in the article I found but that was 4 years ago, so I presume she's a higher rank if she's still in the service).

Has the Navy swung far enough to name a female pilot Top Gun yet?

From the trailer the broad's comment came across as the pilots in the room were all named Top Gun at some point. That's how I took it anyway.

I'm not that excited about it, but will watch when it hits' HBO or whatever it's on.

*Chuckled at the pic of Admiral Iceman.

That doesn't appear to be an actual thing.

Note: Contrary to the famous movie, there was never a Top Gun "trophy" or "winner" in the class. However we did have some gag awards upon graduation.

Oh, and you know that trophy Maverick was determined to wrest away from Ice Man?

There is no such thing as a TOPGUN trophy for the best graduate. There never has been.

TOPGUN isn't about standing out. It's about standing together to be the best and working as an unbeatable team.

quote:

Like any Hollywood movie, Top Gun's commitment to accuracy has its limits. Some of Top Gun's storytelling liberties are about creating character stakes — for instance, there is not, nor has there ever been, a TOPGUN trophy. The trophy is an invention of screenwriters Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., created to give Maverick and rival aviator Iceman (Val Kilmer) something to compete over, establishing sports-style stakes for a war film without a war. In the Danger Zone documentary, former TOPGUN instructor Pete Pettigrew recounts explaining to the screenwriters that if a trophy really existed, "No one would ever graduate. You don't understand the intensity of these guys. ... Everybody would die."

Well that sucks.

Regardless, knowing how the military is about promoting broads I doubt a one is truly in the top pilots yearly.

I doubt it is only PT standards that are lowered.

It was a dumb comment to be filed away under the "no shite" section. Why does it even need to be said?

i was worried it was going to be about some gamer that turned into the world's best drone operator
That's my nephew, the SWCC Warrant Officer, who has flown drones. He went to jump school, and has been trained to call in bomb strikes too. I used to play Wolfenstein, with he and his brother, when they were in elementary school and played Call of Duty online when they were in high school. Any time I played against them, they killed me quickly.

His "fighting" world has kind of come full circle. After being deployed in the Middle East multiple times and to The Philippines. he's had deployments to Italy and Greece. He will be going to Sweden to train boat crews in a couple of weeks.

But the San Francisco Chronicle is listed as well, so that’s a legit positive review.

Considering the sweaty, oiliness of the first one. This checks out.

While he is a nut job, i trust Tom Cruise not to make a shitty action movie, especially one as personal to him as Top Gun

Honestly a good old fashioned “America frick yea!” movie would be great right now. Every movie Hollywood puts out right now shits on this country in some manner.

This movie will probably find a way to do it too.
