ahahaahahah I wish I wouldn't have read that I am on Season 4 of Dexter episode 1

I know right. I was reading the whole thread and then BOOM Dexter spoilers. I only read two sentences but atleast one season was ruined.

I'm not keeping up with a single show (other than Sportcenter) because as I've mentioned quite a few times tv in general pisses me off and overall sucks. And I dont have time to watch a show on a regular basis.

I do love The Office. I finished season six on Netflix not too long ago.
30 Rock. Have watched two seasons on Netflix.
Two seasons of Dexter on instant.
I've watched a decent amount of Always Sunny so that's on my list. And... I think that's it.

Other shows I will watch if I see them on: SONS OF GUNS. River Monsters. American Pickers. Top Shot. No Reservations.

he writers of Dexter have never had a plan to end the series. They keep milking it because it's Showtime's money maker.

I enjoyed the first 4 seasons of Dexter but it became progressively harder to watch. It was the next series I got interested in after LOST. I really couldn't understand exactly why I lost interest in Dexter but your statement above might be part of the answer: the show just doesn't seem to have any direction. I understand the theme of Dexter as a dehumanized killer channeling his need to kill through his father's direction. At first I thought the direction was Dexter's evolution into a loving human being but he doesn't seem to be making much progress. I have only watched the 1st 3 episodes of season 5. I will probably catch back up before the next season starts just to see how it's going.

Scripted dramas are better today than they probably have ever been. Admittedly, there is more crap than there has ever been as well but you don't have to watch it all. Not to mention, with DVR's and the internet it is extremely easy to keep current with serial scripted shows. As for my list it was pretty hard to get it to only five:

Breaking Bad
Supernatural
Community
Justified
Parks & Recreation

Honorable mentions of shows I watch that I considered:
Always Sunny, Sons of Anarchy, Burn Notice, Fringe, Chuck, Walking Dead, Dexter, Chicago Code, The League, Friday Night Lights, Dr. Who, & Sherlock

Canceled show that would have made it:
Terriers

Shows that are supposed to be very good I have not seen:
Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, Treme

Just coming back because I forgot to honorable mention Justified. Also, no one mentioned Parenthood I don't think. Definitely not top 5, but it's a very good show.
