I’d say he plays a pretty convincing Scientologist nut job

Ton of great Tom Cruise roles. It's hard to pick one and any movie suggested as his best role would be correct. My pick would probably be Magnolia though.

Charlie Babbet in Rain Man.
I remember listening to Michael Caine answer this question back on an episode of Inside the Actor's Studio and he was very convincing. Essentially he said that what Dustin Hoffman did was relatively easy. He found the one note that made Raymond autistic and just get playing it. Tom Cruise actually grows throughout the movie, and as a movie goer you dislike him at first and grow to understand his issues with his father and just how difficult it is being around Raymond to ultimately hoping he'd clock the frick out of the therapist at the end of the movie who challenges Raymond and causes him distress. It was really a masterful role.

As a movie, Risky Business is just one of about a dozen or so 80's teen coming-of-age movies, and the story isn't that much different or better than any of the others. But HE was.
Agreed he was exceptional in it, but I'd disagree that it was not more than just a teen coming of age movie. If nothing else, the soundtrack by Tangerine Dream and the cinematography that made each shot look like the perfect 80's magazine print ad places it above the average teen sex movie as far as I'm concerned. Just a fantastic movie.

Edge of Tomorrow is top 10 list material (90% +TM) $370M domestic. Far superior to Oblivion, which wasn't that bad.
"On your feet maggot" (bang) "maggot" (bang) "maggot" (bang): Blunt killed in that movie.

By far the most underrated are Magnolia & Vanilla Sky.

Maybe not his best role, but Oblivion is my favorite movie of his

Not my favorite Cruise movie, but I feel Vanilla Sky is really under rated.

Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise much like John Wayne was John Wayne.
Top pilot, top pool player, top agent, top driver, yada yada yada
Try to think of a movie that John Wayne wasn't John Wayne.

You beat me to it ... those are my two favorites.
This thread definitely does put into perspective the great career the little midget has had.
Plus he’s banged-out Nicole Kidman, Mimi Rogers in her prime, and a few other notable pieces of fine patooty.
The whole Scientology thing is a head scratcher but it does not diminish his greatness as an actor and the fact that he has probably been underrated and under appreciated among his peers due to both their jealousy and his political lean towards the Right.

I agree that Risky Business was his best role.
