Does he play a better role than Jack Reacher?

Just watched both movies again over the last couple of days, and damn Cruise nails it. Really does a great job. Writing, directing is great as well, so that plays a part. Can’t see anyone doing much better.

Most Cruise action roles are about the same, but Reacher, he seems to play differently than the rest. Much better than MI.

Now Tropic Thunder was off the wall different and he nailed it too, but it’s not the same genre he normally does.

Very similar stoic persona. He does a good job there too.

I sense maybe he’s playing those as Clint Eastwood.

I just think those less personable roles he does better.

Jack Reacher 2 is a turd above most turds.

The first one was good but nothing that special. What he did had been done over and over during the late 2000s.

His best role is Collateral without a doubt.

It’s one of those very watchable movies by Cruise but isn’t top 10.

Don't buy that; it's one-note.

And Jerry Maguire is actually one-note to a degree but he shows some range so it's one of his better performances and probably Top 5..., but Collateral is just no range...not far from Cocktail. It's far better than Cocktail - his worst, next to that stupid Sci-Fi movie where there was almost no acting involved. Rinse-Repeat? Whatever it was. It was just dodging bullets from Machines.

Magnolia is up there because it's not just Cruise being Mission Impossible stunt guy.

But what does best role mean?

I wasn't kidding about Risky Business. First off...the subject line said "best role" - that's his best role because it made his career...and his acting in that is REAL. Not, I'm Tom Cruise action star...

But I'm just a guy.

Everyone can say Born on the 4th of July but that's not a big hit nowadays.

But Risky Business was his best role because it made his career, he wasn't Tom Cruise yet so he was natural, and is still to this day probably his most iconic movie apart from Top Gun.

It's not the best movie he's made, but sometimes you have to say what the frick!

I'd agree with this.

As a movie, Risky Business is just one of about a dozen or so 80's teen coming-of-age movies, and the story isn't that much different or better than any of the others. But HE was.

Cruise emerged from that as a movie star, and he's never really declined.

I liked it a lot as a kid and recently did a rewatch...the movie doesnt really hold up. Still enjoyable in ways but I see why you would leave it off.

Vanilla Sky was very underrated. I also really enjoy his Mission Impossible films. They have done a good job with them.

His best acting is Magnolia. He shows every range of emotion.

He is a total douche nozzle. We see him go from total hate to sadness. Nailed the roll.

He is solid in almost everything. Also a nut who likes to do a lot of his stunts.

He is terrible with accents so Valkyrie and Far & Away suffer from his inability to nail and accent.
