Judging from Chase's other credits I've always wondered if he just hit lightning in a bottle with the perfect mix of actors and writers to make that show what it was.

He wanted Van Zant, someone who had never acted before (and it shows), as Tony. HBO said no.

Absolutely what I thought. Judging from Chase's other credits I've always wondered if he just hit lightning in a bottle with the perfect mix of actors and writers to make that show what it was. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve credit but a lot of "creators" start with a basic premise then the team of writers and team of actors take over and really make the show.

That and he had guys like Tony Sirico and Tony Darrow (among other cast members) who grew up/were connected around wise guys so they helped with some of the writing, atleast I always heard Sirico consulted on a lot of the mob aspect parts. Not many guys left to do that and bring that presence to the screen.

He went out and literally hired 27 actors from Goodfellas + Gandolfini and Van Zandt so maybe he was kind of piggybacking on Scorsese's casting. Or he just lost it. Big drop off from the t.v. series to this money grab.

He was talking it up on the Sopranos podcast. The soundtrack was at least good. I actually really liked the "Astral Weeks" montage as I don't think I've seen that in a movie or show (although its probably been) and Van was used heavily in the show as well with the Stones, and the "Sway" scene was Sopranos-ish.

I just watched this last night and I have to agree with the majority here, not too good. It had tons of potential but it just never delivered in my opinion. It also surprised and disappointed me that Tony Soprano was almost an afterthought for most of the movie, all in all it was pretty disappointing

Michael didn’t do bad at his role. The intent was to show how as a kid he morphed into the sociopathic head case that Tony was in the show.

If they do any type of mini series to bridge the movie with the original show I’d be interested to see if he could pull off a Tony character that was more like his dads version. I’m just not sure Michael has the imposing figure to pull it off. James was a giant, intimidating presence that really went a long way to making Tony soprano such a convincing mafia character

But could it be that what so many people really love about the TV show was actually the collaboration/input from a lot of creative people (T Winter, M Wiener, T Van Patten etc) that just wasn’t in the mix for the movie? Seems if all of those folks contributed to the movie, which of course isn’t really practical, it would have been a much different product and likely much more satisfying

That and the show used a lot of authentic Italian actors who already knew the accent, slang, mannerisms so acting the show came natural to them. And many had roles in other gangster movies prior. And then you have Tony Sirico who actually was in the mob at one time.

Show had a lot of authenticity

This. A lot of the actors included their own ad libs and wrote their own scenes to the show. I believe Michael Imperioli wrote 4 or 5 whole episodes to the show.

That's the exact line that I was going to use!
All that I can do is echo what so many others have said.

Originally a movie about race riots that no one cares about.
Doesn't greenlit without the Soprano's angle.

It felt like an hour was spent on Harold / riots and meant nothing in the end.

The age gaps with Sil, Paulie, Pussy and Tony felt way off based on the series.

We learned next to nothing about Johnny Boy other than he went to prison for a few years. Learned even less about Junior. We knew Livia was crazy from day one, but her voice diction sounded like Carmela.

Soprano's fans didn't need their hand held and have 'easter eggs' thrown into every other scene. The original series was about the characters and this movie did nothing to teach me where they came from.

If you remove the great performance by Alessandro Nivola as Dickie - I don't even know what this movie was supposed to be about.

Also, I need to rewatch to see, but wasn't Satriale's taken over by Johnny Boy in the 70s? Yet they were holding shop in the 60s?

It’s basically scenes from conversations from the series plus some other non related stuff then add in who was behind dickie’s death as the only reveal.

Like many. Very disappointing

What a shame and waste of a good opportunity! A mishmash of Sopranoisms with some good acting sprinkled into fair acting. Story line was all over. Too many things that just didn’t feel appropriate for the sopranos series. Then all the time wasted on Harold storyline, such garbage!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME

The one saving grace of this movie. He was great.

I heard Imperioli say that he thinks Nivola will be nominated for an Academy Award for this performance. TTFWIW, because granted, Imperioli has an inherent bias…but he is also well-respected in Hollywood, and would know all the buzz.

Yeah, I kind of cocked an eyebrow myself when I heard him say that.

But it was a great performance in an otherwise dismal movie. And I’ve seen performances like that get nominated before. It’ll all depend upon the competition, I guess.
