Shiiiit, Karl Urban is all I needed to see.

I really wanted Jean Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage. Write him in as a washed up movie star that was the last survivor of the previous tournament. Give him a drug and drink addiction and pull him in to assist Raiden in getting the fighters ready for the upcoming tournament.

That casting and story would print money and it makes sense. Johnny Cage was based off JCVD and it would bring things full circle.

ETA: Kitana will likely be Hanzo (Scorpion's) daughter.

That looks absolutely badass. I’m all in.

Hopefully Cole is killed off opening fight of the tournament

This, 100%.

think Cole will die early which will force Scorpion to return to avenge his bloodline (again). Cole will then take the mantle of Scorpion close to the end as Hiroyuki's character finally gets peace.

Lewis Tan is just too good of a martial artist and actor to remove from the franchise if they want to keep it going. And he's pretty bankable coming off Cobra Kai.

So I think he will become the new Scorpion in the post credit scene.

I’d even be okay with that if you want to keep the actor in the franchise. But the addition of Cole in the first movie was a gigantic mistake. He was bad and his power was hilariously stupid and bad.

Please tell me this hits streaming and theaters at the same time (or close to it) like the last one did.

I honestly think they kill off Cole and his family in the opening segment of the film to really raise the stakes and establish how dark this world is. That gives Scorpion motivation, and a fighter having a wife and child was really a weird idea for something like Mortal Kombat.

I think Cole will reappear to help Scorpion in his last battle -- similar to the first movie in reverse -- and assume the mask and become less of a boy scout and more of a dark/tragic character.

Personally, I'm not a lore purist and didn't really mind Cole as a character -- because I like Tan -- but from a studio perspective, the fans want the game characters and nothing else. Perfectly reasonable. Hiroyuki Sanata is getting old and he can't really be expected to play Scorpion for the next 10 years, so Lewis Tan taking his place just makes sense.

Now because what I said makes sense, they probably won't do it.

Very clear they needed a big western Anglo star to help the franchise. The first movie was fine, but did not hat have any name Wdtern actor in it and that hurt it a lot.

Nobody will ever beat Christopher Lambert as Raiden, though.

First movie I think was the first Covid era film I got to see after lockdowns, it wasn’t perfect but man it hit at the right time. Like a cold beer on the first CFB saturday kickoff.

after watching the Johnny cage-centric trailer, and noticing that lewis tan is still in the credits, my first inclination was that he gets killed off rather early. and I'm good with that because it was pretty lame introducing a new character for the first movie.

that said, I agree that Tan is a bad-arse dude worthy of the franchise, and they could easily kill him off and have him come back as one of a few masked ninja characters. Scorpion makes the most sense given the storyline of the first movie.

I was so hype for the 1st one I got off of working nights the morning it came out and immediately cracked a beer for it at 4am lol

The sub-zero - scorpion fight at the end was an all timer but other than that it was just ok. Definitely all in for 2

the beginning and the end of the first movie was awesome. I barely remember anything else. I hope sub zero makes an appearance in this one.

I don’t really know the lore just what I remember from the first couple games when I was kid and movies. Isn’t there a subzero that doesn’t have a mask and is “good” seems that would be something they could also do if Tan is to be the face going forward. Also the subzero in 1 dies and turns all black isn’t that another of the ninjas?

Rewatched the first one last night because I had forgotten a lot of what happened.

The good:

The opening scene
Lot of good kills
Kano
Cyrax
Scorpion/Sub Zero-but Scorpion’s appearance towards the end is sort of laughable in a bad way
Set design
Goro-but tone down the CGI next go around
The Jax frozen arm bit by Sub Zero was awesome and brutal
Kung Lao as a character

The bad:
Cole’s character and power-so incredibly stupid, solid actor though and great martial artist, hoping he is Scorpion as some are thinking will happen in 2
Liu Kang, could’ve told me this actor had transitioned and I would’ve believed it
Kung Lao’s acting-might be the most badass character in the movie but the acting was so shitty, could’ve been even better
The Sub Zero costume is trying too hard, tone that shite down. (The OG movie nailed the look, just needed a slightly updated higher quality version of those with him and Scorpion)
Scorpion using a sword
Was that Reptile? Would’ve been A LOT cooler as a Ninja in green
The “new” version of the theme, bring back the OG theme
Shang Tsung-shitty actor-OG movie like Liu Kang NAILED the castings, this version looked like he should be running a Dry Cleaner as a villain in a Curb episode…not the leader of the most deadly tournament in the universe

There’s a lot of good in this one and there’s also a lot of bad, but overall a solid 6/10. Need more fun music during the fight scenes. The Zero and Scorpion costumes were just trying way too hard.

I’ve also realized I’ve nerded out a ton over the last week about this franchise. Had no idea I cared so much 90s nostalgia is amazing

Sub Zero has a younger brother who takes the role and typically fights for Earthrealm. The older Sub Zero does become Noob Saitbot.

Like others have posted it makes more sense for Tan to take on the role of Scorpion if he's a direct descendent. The clans that Sub Zero and Scorpion were in hated each other so wouldn't make sense for Cole to join the Lin Kuei.
