Pretty sure that was in Varsity Blues.

Love the movie, but the voiceover at the end talking about how he never played football again when they clearly still had playoffs always bothers me on a re-watch.

But Mox says it was their last game of the season.

WTF? Did Mox just quit on the team and skip the playoffs?

Either that or he meant he never played football again after they either won the state title or lost in the playoffs.

That's how I always took it. Would've been nice to know what happened that year though. The only thing though, is that the movie makes such a big deal out of District titles. That's what Kilmer was most proud of, and that always seemed to be the goal. So I guess in the grand scheme of things, that's why the movie ends there instead of the state championship. But seems like even a small throwaway line like "Even though we lost in the State final that year, we continued the Coyote tradition of winning District titles" or some bullshite like that would've helped.

Did Mox finally get to lay the wood to Julie? Got his friend's position and screwed his sister. Should have screwd his friend's girl too.

Always loved this movie until Friday Night Lights (movie) came out which was more revered as a true Texas High School football depiction. After seeing it and going back and watching Varsity Blues seems more cheesy and comedic than anything.

To answer your question tho, it wouldn’t surprise me if Moxen quit on the team while convincing all his buddies to quit on themselves as well.

I wish Bud Kilmer was the coach of my high school football team. He’s everything you want in a coach. I thought that when I was 18 watching the movie for the first time and 20 years later believe it even more so.

Mox was an embarrassment to West Canaan. I’d have cut his arse and played whoever was 3rd string.

I mean he’s basically every 90s and 2000s big 10 coach who got fired for never updating the offense and being a dick to everyone because they don’t respect what they did in the 80s

Yeah, except for the whole "endangering his players and not giving a shite about their safety" thing.

Also, any thoughts on Wendell: ?
quote:

What I laugh at is how selfish and terrible of a teammate Wendell is. He's all mad about Kilmer not getting him TDs. Well, Wendell, maybe if you've run the ball all the way down the field, mixing it up and throwing it may be a decent strategy...especially if you've got a QB like Lance. Or even if it's legit that Kilmer doesn't want to give you TDs because you're black, don't get mad at Max (or the other players) for that. Like he bitches at Mox and he's all like "You don't understand, bro...you white." But as soon as Mox says "I'll get you in the endzone, Wendell is like "Okay, we cool, Mox." So all you want is your TDs for your own personal recruitment nad you don't give a frick about anybody else? Got it.

I can go along with that. Billy Bob was the only selfless one sacrificing for the team. Everyone else had their own selfish agendas.

Nah Wendell had a legit gripe based on how recruiting worked back then. You had to 100 percent leverage your coaches to get connected with recruiters and colleges unless you had crazy stats that grabbed attention and it was clear that Kilmer was not doing that for Wendell

Especially in Texas, I believe FNLs touched on this in the first season, there used to be 1-2 guys that would scout local Texas games and programs and his ranking had an insane effect on players scholarships.

I didn’t take that scene with Mox as bitching to him about his issue like it was his fault, he was just frustrated because Mox wasn’t actually paying attention to what was clear as day happening to him

Also there’s a big gap in their plights that Mox couldn’t understand. Mox has no issue quitting because Kilmer is a dick and he just wants to have fun and he’ll get to go to Brown, where he doesn’t even plan to play football, so really who cares for him. I took the implication that Wendell needs a football scholarship to be able to go to college, and so his issue is much much larger than Mox’s, so he was frustrated with Mox brushing off his problem like he did.

That’s another one of those other crazy things about the movie:

Varsity Blues was ahead of its time in exposing the issues of CTE and mental health in a kind of serious way

And then over there is Mox’s little brother participating in a cult (I had completely forgotten about this, too. What a crazy little detail to put in for seemingly no reason)

I wouldn’t say that. If Kilmer didn’t have an up to date offense, then Lance would never have gotten a scholarship to Florida State. Kilmer was just a typical hard arse football coach, and MTV (who produced the movie) wanted to make him the villain and the story be “rebellious teens overcome their azzhole football coach”. Except the football coach is a huge winner, and most towns/players support winners by whatever means they use as long as they win. It felt like this movie was written by people that never actually played football.

For me the only real entertaining part of the movie is Tweeder’s funny lines. Making Voight the villain, and Mox the hero pissed me off. The strip club scene was fine. There were 18 year old nude clubs back then. What was kind of unbelievable is that nobody knew the health teacher worked there? Unless it was her first night, everyone in a small town will know who is working at the local strip club.
