All that matters is who the people in casting want.
I mean, you would think they would go with an actor the majority of the fans would be happy with. The people in casting knew this would alienate fans but they didn't care.
I've never read the books and wasn't even that big of a fan of the movies so this isn't something I care that much about, but it kind of shows you early on that these people are more worried about making themselves feel good than what fans would want and the source they are basing their show off of.

No one of any race would have had an issue with them casting Snape as the book physically describes him.
No one.

in fairness I have not read the books yet - only see the films.
if he is described int he text as a pale white guy, then i retract what I said - that would fall into the woke/pandering realm and I am out.

He is definitely a pale white guy in the books.
That will never change. His skin color in the books does not impact his character though, it is just a physical description. You could change that discription in the books and nothing else would change as a result.

So Bilbo Baggins can be 6' tall in movies?

No. I didn't WANT them to cast Snape as a black actor. I just don't care that they did.
If you truly didn’t care you likely wouldn’t be in a thread arguing about the characters race on an tv show to prove how much you don’t care fwiw.

lol this makes no sense. it's everyone else complaining about the casting, not me.
To me it's no different than changing Hermione's hair or Harry's eye color.
I'm still waiting on someone to tell me how it is.

Game of Thrones literally changed several characters DURING the show and it still didn't ruin the character for me.
They changed Daario, the Mountain, Selyse, Beric, and The Three-Eyed Raven.
All it did was make me re-adjust the image of that character in my head. It takes half a second.
Let's not forget the Dumbledore recast also in the movies.
How can anyone say starting with a different looking actor than the books portraying a character is a bigger change than changing the character during the show/movie run?

Again, this a false equivalency. We are not complaining that they are making Snape’s hair a different color or style (Hermoine), or making his facial features different (Neville) or even exchanging one old, white guy for another (Dumbledore). This is a completely different take that radically changes how an established character looks, which would imply that they are trying to radically change the character in the process. Do you have a single ounce of reason in your head?

skin color is just a different amount of melanin, same as hair/eye color.
it is not a bigger change, it is equivalent

Not really a retcon because I’m pretty sure his sexuality was never mentioned. Regardless it did give us this memorable fake tweet

I mean, that’s just patently false. Changing small characteristics like hair style and eye color are nothing like changing an entire ethnicity of one of the books most famous characters

you don't have to change someones whole character background to change skin color.

His skin color will impact the story pretty drastically though. Snape was a cruel dorky kid that even went mental and called his best friend in the world very bigoted stuff.
This change in racial dynamic completely changes that origin story. If the 4 marauders are all white, especially James Potter and Sirius, now that changes the whole bullying dynamic of some rich white kid bullying this outcast geeky black boy. The racial aspect has now shifted from Snape being the bigot with the anti muggle stuff to James being a racist. That's pretty impactful to the story. Now you got this whole crap about Harry defending his racist father.
Dude is straight up too good looking for Snape as well. It's just a bad casting that is going to force too many changes to the story.

That’s an assumption on your part, which begs the question, why radically change the way he looks for no reason? That’s because this question has been answered time and time again: they want to change fundamental parts of classic media to shoehorn in current ideas and trends despite that being wildly unpopular with the fans. It’s gives these corporations the ability cry “racism!” when their product inevitably sucks

Do you understand the implications the race change makes on Snape specifically? Do you understand how it affects the audiences reaction to not just Harry but especially James Potter?
You could make numerous characters a different race. Snape is one of the worst to do it

he was recast because the original actor fricking died you twit - not even the same realm as everything else.
and your right - changing it in the book will in no way change the character onscreen, but you can't just arbitrarily change the book to fit the on screen narrative - unless you did like Meyer and redid Twilight where you changed it in a totally new book.
