Thoughts on Resident Evil (2026)

I was fully on board with this movie till the end but the end definitely soured me on the whole experience.
I’ve played many resident evil games and they are very silly but this was just too much. WTF am I watching.
Now till they get to their final location, I was all on board. Some bad CGI, sure. I like the main actor, but I think they played too much like screaming like a little girl too much. A lot of the jokes fell flat (theater wasn’t laughing at much) but I still found it entertaining. I was for portions of this movie seriously impressed.
Then they just go CGI screwball at the end and I just didn’t give a shite.
I didn’t watch the entire movie for that meaningless shite to happen. You want nihilistic, you can do better. You want funny, you can do better. You want something that feels like resident evil, you can do better.
The ending just felt like trash to me

Fair criticisms, but I was just happy to get a Resident Evil movie that wasn’t another Jovovich sequel

This is way worse than Weapons and Barbarian, both movies I really like. I still think Barbarian is by far his best movie.
This movie felt like a bunch of skits one after the other. And that’s ok but it l don’t from a crafted story telling perspective, I find it lacking.

Is this a situation where the movie doesn’t really reach its own score?
I felt that way about The Backrooms. I didn’t understand the love and praise and left really disappointed.

I haven't seen Backrooms because I think it's the anti-Odyssey where I imagine it is the type of money that isolation, quiet, and being alone are the best ways to "buy in" and experience the disoriented feeling. Like Skinamarink.

Not sure I fully understand the question, but I will say there is a lot of good shite in here. If you play resident evil, you’ll get enjoyment out of that. And I believe that’s what so many people are responding well to. I get that. But I can’t help but think it stops trying.
There’s a point (not a spoiler) near the end of the movie where a character shouts “video games” when he does something well and I feel like people are laughing at the irony, but I found that cringey

To clarify, barbarian is great all the way through in my opinion. Weapons is a good movie.

I liked weapons and Barbarian but I will say that’s my biggest gripe with Creegar. He leans way to much into the comedy at the end for my taste

This is way more of a comedy than anything else he’s done. The movie carves out serious time for punchlines which I also found distracting sometimes and took me out of the movie

Where are the fun horror/sci fi/action movies. And I don’t mean funny, I mean fun. There’s a difference. Comedy and horror are both are all about building tension. That has its place. But then where is the thrill. Where do we see something that makes us along the ride and feel like a part of the adventure?

I thought it was a lot of fun. The humor felt just like my commentary as I play the games. The city is a few hours away from getting nuked so it’s not like he was ever going to get a happy ending.

The ending took out ALL agency from the main character in this movie. So he is sidelined in his own movie. In the end has no meaningful impact at all to the world around him. He could have gone home and broken up with his girlfriend and nothing would be different.
Usually bleak stories have some sort of themes they’re layering throughout the movie that support the ending. I think a great example of this is Return of the Living Dead and its commentary its satirical jabs at the military industrial complex. Meanwhile, we get some character growth in this movie but everything around it, while well executed, is paper thin.
What are we supposed to take away from this film.

Sounds like it from the reviews I've seen. Cregger has a lot of good will with critics so they're gonna be nice to him. Game fans seem to really hate this as it has almost no references to the games.

Highly recommend. Creggor had some cheeky humor, periods of egregious violence and didn’t try to overexplain the entire RE story. He stayed true to form. The lead actor was hilarious.

I'm agnostic as to the games, FWIW
I just had the way horror that is becoming popular is using comedy as a crutch and ignoring the horror aspect.
Even Obsession couldn't avoid it.
If critics and viewers don't punish these movies in the market, we're going to get a generation of horror movies as shitty as millennial horror.
