YouTube video

I really liked this video; he made some good points, and also notes things that Conan did that cemented him as:

An amazing host
An incredibly funny comedian
An awesome boss

(The last part - where he kept paying the non-writing members of his team during a writers' strike out of his own pocket, and then during the pandemic kept making his show using an iPhone and little else so that the show was officially still on the air and therefor could keep paying his staff and they would not need to file for unemployment).

Somehow Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, James Corden and Amber Ruffin all had shows instead of Conan.

Conan is the greatest at interviewing guests.

Colbert's show was because of his persona show on Comedy Central... but when he got his late night show he abandoned that and now it's just cookie-cutter stuff.

Noah and Corden I legit don't get. They have some occasional funny things, but then they'll run those into the ground.

I have not seen any of Amber Ruffin's stuff so, honestly, I have no opinion one way or another.

Conan wrote funny stuff but I found him annoying. I'd read jokes of his and think really funny, but watching him was cringy. for me. was spoiled by Carson and Letterman.

I think he's a marginal interviewer, a fairly quick wit, and his greatest fault is that he milks a punchline to the point where he hurts the joke.

That being said, I've never wanted an entertainer to succeed more. He's the most genuinely likable host in the history of hosts. As much as I idolize Letterman and Carson, I'd never want to risk more than a handshake with either of them. I think Conan would be amazing to be around and I'd think would have the best work environment of any of his contemporaries.

And Andy Richter is the sharpest and best all-around sidekick ever.

It often takes a while for the host to feel comfortable...and the audience to fully understand the host's sense of humor. I didn't love Conan early on. Just like I didn't find Norm McDonald incredibly funny right out of the gate. But once you started to understand their personalities they became incredibly funny.

Conan also benefits from the fact he is of the last generation of hosts who could actually BE FUNNY without fear of self-hating progressives going apoplectic with social media virtue signaling over something that was "offensive". Today, ALL of the late shows are pathetic because the parameters of things you can discuss are absurdly small

He was also one of the writers of The Simpsons during its golden era. I think he wrote the Monorail episode.

Conan's trips abroad are my favorite.

His trip to Italy with Jordan might be my favorite late night sketch ever.

His final monologue about not being jaded -

That's the reason we'll never get another Conan. His level of honesty, what comedy is, etc.

NBC ran off Conan and CBS ran off Craig Ferguson. Now we're left with unwatchable garbage. Unbelievable! As someone who was a loyal fan of late night comedy shows, it's dead and buried at this point. It had a good run tho.

No doubt he’s good. I just like Conan’s style and personality better.

It really was some great TV. I think most of these guys are remembering the later years.

Especially with the ladies. Listening to him on a podcast, he got the gig because he made what he thought was an outlandish deal. High pay and long term contract. CBS agreed. So his show was so great because he just didn't care or prep that much. He would just wing it with interviews and let the guest take the direction. Ad-lib the monolog. Read emails and tweets and make comments. That was it. He just didn't care if he got fired.
