Anyone watching this tomorrow night on NBC? What the frick is this even? A reimagining of The Wizard of Oz? An offshoot story? prequel/sequel? I don't get it. I'm not even going to even get into the racial connotations.

I may watch it to see it carries artistic value, because I like that shite, but I'm not decided.

I think the wiz was a black version of the wizard of oz made in the 80s.

Either way, no thanks.

Short Answer--Wiki

quote:

The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical was an early example of Broadway's mainstream acceptance of works with an all-black cast. The musical has had revivals in New York, London, San Diego and the Netherlands, and a limited-run revival was presented by Encores! at New York City Center in June 2009. A big-budget film adaptation of the same name was released in 1978 and has since become a cult classic.

1978 movie starred:

Diana Ross--Dorothy
Michael Jackson--Scarecrow
Nipsey Russell--Tinman
Ted Ross--Lion
Richard Pryor--The Wiz
Mabel King--Evillene
Lena Horne--Glinda the Good

TL;dr (OT style): SJW's hate Judy Garland. Long live the Queen (Latifah)

It's not new and the movie was horrible.. The Broadway production was supposedly very good but I doubt it will transfer over to the small screen very well

I might be horribly wrong, but I'm gonna try. I live in St. Pete. I've seen tons of signs saying shite like..."started in St. Pete.....worked out way to Broadway." With the cover of this show tagging along, of course.

I think people have been working to get The Wiz on Broadway for a minute now and finally sorta did it? Idk. The previews look live. And again, there are countless posters around St. Pete about it. Idk, hope this helps.

I've seen the movie. It's really really long, super trippy, terrifying as all get out, and resplendant with poigniant social commentary on inner city black culture. It's worth a viewing, imo. Oh, and the music is pretty great.

I know it's an old production. Thought maybe the push to get it on Broadway was sorta new maybe......? Maybe not.

It amazes me how many people have never heard of it. It was on PBS a lot when I was a kid. Always weirded me out.

Michael Jackson and Diana Ross working together on this is what started Mike down his road of plastic surgery and bleaching his skin. He told Diana Ross that she looked perfect. All the shite he did to himself was to try to look like her.

Its kind of what you expect out of a "cult classic" super weird which will make you either love it or laugh at how weird it is

It's a great Broadway play. It swept the Tonys back in the day. It has a solid score and some great music.

I wonder what kind of backlash there would be if someone wanted to make an intentionally all-white remake of Roots or something.

I mean, if you want to remake wizard of oz fine, go ahead and remake it. It just seems odd that there was the stipulation that is has to be all black.

I'm recording it for my daughter. While I expect it to be terrible, she will probably love it. She absolutely loves Peter Pan Live and that was some of the worst shite I've ever seen on prime time network television.
