Watched it a few years ago after hearing all the hype about it, and how great it is. Didn't love it. Rewatching now bc, I've watched everything else on the internet, so I thought I'd give this a try again. I thought it was overhyped and meh the first time around. I'm 4-5 episodes in this time around and it's fine but nothing to write home about. Maybe it gets better? Just not living up to all the hype for me.

Down vote away.

My first rewatch made me like it much more. My third made it even better. I caught a lot of things I didn't catch in the original viewing of the show.

This was true for me especially for Season 2. Which we all didn't care much for at the time, but upon rewatch is really good.

it starts slow no doubt but theres an event that you haven't gotten to in yet that lights the spark on the fuse and it really takes off.

It had been 7-8 years since i watched it the first time and rewatched it myself a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved...

i found myself after several episodes saying like man this is the best show ever made

I dont remember enjoying s 2 the first time and maybe bc I didnt know it was such a hard turn from what season 1 had been...

upon rewatch I thought it was just as good as the other seasons... really enjoyed it

I thought it was good, but just don't understand why people think it's an all time good show. If I really put enough time into a top 25ish list it probably wouldn't make the cut.

Because it explores important issues and institutions (race, the drug war, police and policing, economic change, local politics, education and the media) on a deeper and more honest level than anything before or since. Same with character development, it shows characters that not just 2 dimensional cliches but are humans that have strength's and flaws that are shaped but their environment and the institutions that are more realistic

I think I would have enjoyed it much more if it had followed the 1st season storyline all the way through.

I'd say it is still relevant with the current events of today and was really ahead of its time.

It also does a great job of portraying how the system is the real villain. Police, politicians/government, gangs, etc are all hamstrung by the overarching system in place.

The individual groups are all more similar than any of the individual members would ever realize or admit.

Also...

frick.

i disagree with you. when I watch The Wire, I just feel like I'm watching greatness. the scope and depth of everything is remarkable and i dont see how anyone could make a show like this. it has to be the most well-researched tv show ever.

i used to be a sopranos GOAT guy, but Wire is above it now for me. it may not be my favorite ever, but it's probably the greatest

Great show imo. I am currently in the middle of season 4. Every time I go to watch the next episode I am expecting to see it has been the victim of cancel culture and BLM.

I find this sentiment very sad but however it does it just adds layers and story lines along the way. if you mean specifically the Barksdale crew that goes thru S3.

Why? If anything, outside of some individual scenes in episodes, the show has aged amazingly well. I would argue in the age of defund the police, its easily the most realistic TV portrayal of police I've ever seen. A a few super bad cops, a bunch of average joes just trying to get their pension, and some good cops with serious flaws, all caught up in a system that never changes.

Also while, not the best, Season 5s portray of the media hits home even more these days.

No exaggerating when I say that I think it’s the greatest television show of all time.

The same for me. I rewatched the series again a few weeks ago and started to skip season 2 altogether. I'm glad that I didn't. I really enjoyed it.
