The Wire - McNulty and the boat

I am certain this has been asked before but I couldn’t dig it up.
Rewatching The Wire and I can’t figure out if McNulty actually hates the Marine Unit or if he lied about it being the place he would never want to go. He was warned ahead of time they might ask him the question so a canny detective would have hedged his bet and not offered a true answer to the query.
So did McNulty hate the boat or did he lie about it to avoid a desk?

Been a minute but pretty sure he likes the boat. Wasn’t it the evidence guy who warned him about how to answer? He didn’t want to get stuck in the basement so he chose fresh air and fishing

If anyone asks about your least favorite anything, I usually will answer with something that I at least somewhat enjoy.
Like when someone is about to buy you a shot, and they ask what your least favorite liquor is, then they buy whatever you said it was.

He mentioned his hatred of boats to his Sgt. early in season 1. Lansmen sold him out.

I’m pretty sure he hates the boat though. It’s Lester that tells him they will ask where he doesn’t want to go but he said he hated the boat before that

He doesn't necessarily "hate" the boat, but it was miserable to him because of the fumes. Freamon kept reminding him in Season 3 that he needed to show loyalty to Daniels for getting him "off the boat."
The "best" duty for him, from a personal fulfillment/health standpoint was as a beat cop (see Season 4), but he was best suited for homicide or MCU type work - however, that work was slowly destroying him.

Nah, he didn't like the boat. I can remember Major threatening McNulty by saying he would "send him back to the boat" a few times in later seasons. McNulty likes to work cases

He hates the boat and had mentioned it to the powers that be before he got the advice from Lester to lie.

He hated the boat. It literally made him sick.
