I'll bet you a dollar Herschell knows where Sophia is. I'll bet she is in the barn.

I still don't completely understand the whole idea of having walkers in that barn.

Ghost Merle. I love Michael Rooker as an actor, but the use of ghost characters just irritates me in general. and he didn't add much.

He kept Darryl alive and changed him into something new.

Shane's development into the most fascinating character on the show. He's not evil, he's just amoral. And his logical argument isn't entirely wrong.
Yes! His logical argument makes perfect sense. He will become the polar opposite of Rick. Hopefully.

One thing that I liked when he and Rick were talking back and forth was this realization: The feel like old men telling stories because all the characters in them are dead. But it was only a few weeks ago. That's an interesting and haunting perspective. I liked that that was in there to make me see the world as they do.

It's made clear that a "Cure" doesn't exist.

I don't think he did turn into something new. And you realize Ghost Merle wasn't there, so he was talking to himself?

Herschel's shift to a quiet dictator is complete. He started as this kindly old man, and now he's getting ready to evict them and resentful of everything the gang does. The shift was believable and well done

I have a different theory to his statement "they are not going to be around much longer..."

Those barn zombies gotta have something to eat.

Do the people at the farm house know that? No.

Either that, or that new dude that popped out of nowhere has been in there the whole time playing with them like hamsters in a cage.

But it changed him. Did you see how he is going to be different when he is at 100% health. He changed Darryl ideology of the group he's with? I saw Merle as a boost of strength to get out of that pit. He pulled Merle out of his memories to give himself a kick in the butt. I guess I needed to say I didn't see Merle as a ghost but a emotion, a motivation like what would Merle do?

Only Sophia's mom is safe.

He keeps them in the barn for two reasons. One is that he probably knew them and he can't bear to kill them. Reason number two is that it is becoming clear that he is a controlling dictatorial old man. What better way to continue controlling your friends and family than to lock them up in a barn after they turn into zombies?

I completely disagree. If anything it will make Darryl more group oriented. Merle showed up to belittle him about how he has gotten soft and needs to ditch the group. Darryl realized it was Merle that was damaging to him throughout his life and that he was better off/stronger without him.

Or he's waiting/hoping for a cure. In a conversation with Rick in ep 2 or 3, he mentioned that he is hopeful for a cure which Rick immediately said is not gonna happen.

Hope for a cure is a convenient excuse for him, yes. He probably even believes that is why he is doing it.

So Herschel is a pretty messed up character, and we'll soon realize that in coming episodes...

The potential is definitely there. Remember his telling the story of his abusive father.

Doesn't exist yet.
A couple episodes back Hershel said something to Rick about a cure being found or something to that effect. Makes me think he's trying to work on a cure or doing some observation/experiment with them.

There can't be a cure, because they are dead. If you cure them, they would just die.

That bitch needs to get back to washing clothes... Andrea's character in general just pisses me off. I can't believe no one has slapped the frick out of her yet.

Correct. But that isn't going to stop a distraught father, husband and brother from holding out hope. He's no scientist and he's very religious. It's completely believable that he would hold onto hope that his family can be cured eventually.
