Umm, why? How?

Luke- Born on desert planet.
Rey - Born on desert planet.

Luke - Takes off on wild adventure, leaving his home in the Millennium Falcon.

Rey - Takes off on wild adventure, leaving her home planet in the Millennium Falcon.

Luke - Discovers he has strange Jedi powers.

Rey - Discovers she has strange Jedi powers.

I can go on if you want me to…

Most of the time this kind of response is warranted, but don't be a moron. Anything with Rey has a massive backing. This board may not like it, but Rey is an immensely popular character. It's why they have to get this right.

None of this is true.

She started out being well received, but now the only folks who care to see her are ReyLo freaks and now that Kylo is dead, how can they care?

Rogue One is proof. By all almost all normal movie standards, that movie sucks except for the fan service.

I couldn't even finish it, and I haven't tried to watch a second of anything in the franchise since. So, it worked I guess.

LOL wut?

Luke earned everything through repeated failure and perseverence.

Rey was always the best because she was the best. She never lost, never failed. She was little more than challenged a couple times and she easily overcame it all.

Boring, worthless arse character. When people tell me they like her character, I ask them why. What aspects of her personality do they connect with?

Usually ends with them calling me a sexist.

must be why it is so hard to find writers.

And why they are already calling SW fans sexists because of potential backlash for the movie. . .because she is so popular.

I know! She's a cheap imitation. That's why she's a Mary Sue. it's a weak, low effort story line and character.

She is Luke, if he were written by people who have only vaguely heard of Star Wars

So you never watched Empire Strikes Back?

Luke spends the movie:

1. Getting shot down
2. Training with a master
3. Then getting his arse kicked by Vader

More times than you can possibly imagine.

Luke EARNED his way to becoming a Jedi.

Mary Rey basically was always awesome, she just needed Luke to get out of the way.

Seriously, how are you not getting any of this?

Bro, she bypassed the compressor. She’s not just Luke, she’s a better mechanic than Chewy, a better pilot than Han, more powerful than Yoda, Vader or The Emperor. Nobody is even close to Rey, that’s why she’s so popular.

No question Rey was supposed to be a copy of Luke.

However, you implied that Luke has no arc, no obstacles to overcome, etc.

Maybe I misread you.

The problem is they tried to make "girl Luke" just happen. They just immediately tried to tag her in as the new Luke without any of the complexity or growth his character had.

One of the most obvious problems with the "sequel trilogy" is ttat they weren't actually sequels. It was basically a DEI reboot attempt that the general public rejected. People wanted ACTUAL sequels to the original trilogy. New characters could have been introduced slowly and growth into the world but they just tried to force all the new shite completely unearned.

LOLOLOLOL

I mean she's not flat out hated like that fat asian chick but she's not even in the top 10 of beloved Star Wars characters, hell she may not even be top 20. Which is pathetic considering the entire last trilogy was based around her.

“Rey is an immensely popular character.”

You know that scene in Inherent Vice when Bigfoot is talking to Doc through the TV? The reaction Doc has to it is exactly how I felt reading that comment.

Yeah but Luke sucked as a Jedi at first and failed a bunch. Got his arse kicked and his hand chopped off. Failed his Jedi training. Rey never once piloted a spacecraft but was better at it than Han Solo, she knew how to fix the Falcon better than Chewbacca, and with zero training could already use Jedi mind tricks and out fight Kylo Ren with a light saber. I get that her and Luke had similar backgrounds, but that's were any resemblance between the 2 dies.

Wasn't my intention in the least. Fans of the OG, aka actual "Star Wars" movies saw Luke go from simple farm boy, overreaching student to full on Jedi. That took 3 films. Mary Rey bypassed the compressor in no time, used the Jedi mind trick before she even had any training, and then goes off having dream Jedi zoom calls with Kylo and visiting the world-between-worlds ... it was contrived, unearned garbage. It was always "Oh look! I've just discovered I can do this thing! Whatever the hell this thing is, I can do it! And better than my Jedi Master, who'd been doing Jedi stuff for decades!"
