Again, STAR WARS doesn't have an original story. We're simply retelling the Hero's Quest in a different setting. I mean, Star Wars ins't exactly subtle, and things don't exactly hinge on the story. Asking the sequel to be this full original when not even the original movie was seems silly.
Star Wars' selling point is its execution and characters (with a healthy dose of John Williams).

The PT manages to tell an original story while including some not so obvious callbacks to the original films.

To a point, I agree. The copy/paste of IV into VII was a bit ridiculous.

Meh. People say this but it was much more a retread of the entire OT than just IV. The last act of VII has more themes from VI than IV.
