I always liked the Anti-superman. The one that got his powers from the yellow sun and shot lightning from his fingers. He is was in one of Christopher Reeves movies.

I don’t like how the Jesse Eisenberg Lex Luthor is the one that we could say definitively beat him.
The guy creates a monster that can match Clark, and that monster kills Clark. He gets thrown in jail, but he rid the world of Superman as far as he was concerned.
This just never sat right with me.

Superman has a great rogues gallery - Brainiac, Metallo, Parasite, Mongul.
Of those, the average movie goer may have heard of one.

The problem is that it is being directed by someone who cannot crack the code for Superman. Any chance I thought of possibly seeing this movie is gone right out the window now.
“Screw them, I don’t care!“
James Gunn inserts ‘modern day’ immigration theme into Superman movie, dismisses anybody who doesn’t agree with his view.
Hard pass.

It isn’t Superman that has me disinterested in this movie - - it is the fact that this will be the SIXTH TIME we have seen him deal with Lex Luthor on screen.
I heard a review of Todd Phillips' Joker movie that resonated with me. The reviewer basically said it doesn't bother them that there's a new origin story, or that it's a spin on a classic comic arc. They liken it loosely to Shakespeare. You don't go into a play saying, "Jesus Christ. How many times are they going to redo Hamlet?"
Comic stories are almost like legends from ancient civilizations. There are common themes, but so many different iterations across the generations.
The Lex Luthor issue you raise is only a problem under the artificial construct that there can be only one Superman. There can be only one Lex Luthor. There can be only one cohesive DC universe in which all of these characters exist. Ironically, it seems like James Gunn got the green light to create that DC version of the MCU, so we might see those problems dealt with in time.
The other issue is that when you kill off a big bad/super villain/arch nemesis quickly, you eventually run out of opposition. Good villains are a finite resource. Chew through them too quickly, and you have the problem with Gor the God Butcher in that last awful Thor movie. No one is saying that he should've lasted for 23 films like Thanos, but there's a happy medium, and the least palatable answer would be to kill him off after a single film.

For those not interested in the rage bait:
quote:
"I mean, Superman is the story of America,” Gunn says. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.” I ask if he has considered how differently the film might play in say, blue state New York — aka Metropolis — and Kansas, where Kent grew up? “Yes, it plays differently,” Gunn admits. “But it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”
Pretty controversial stuff here. We're used to seeing Superman kill any non-American he comes across.
the actual interview the YouTube idiots are aggregating.

Absurdly giving cover for the self inserting current day politicization of an iconic character is on point here.
“Yes, it plays differently,” Gunn admits. “But it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”
Translation: If you’re not on board with fully open borders & a flood of illegals coming in & smashing public services & upsetting the established cultural norms as we insert OUR politics into a well known IP - screw you!!
“the YouTube idiots are aggregating…”
Not giving the corporate speak & offering unfiltered commentary from a man on the street fan level perspective.

I've seen two Marvel films - Ironman and the first Avengers (I think those are "Marvel" films). Just don't see the need to see a story with Thanos in it.
I've been burnt out on super hero movies for forever it seems. I would get downvoted to death saying they needed to take a long break after Endgame and would be one of the guys that would be ok if they never made another Marvel movie for the rest of eternity.
That being said, you're missing out if you haven't watched Infinity War and Endgame. They aren't just great super hero movies, they are great movies in general and Thanos was the highlight.

While I tend to agree, to be fair we have not seen the real Lex Luthor in any of these films. They always revert to him being campy. Luthor is NOT campy.
I think this one might finally get it right, but we will have to see for certain this weekend

Braniac and Darkseid are the S-TIER Supes baddies
You can't have them from jump.
Start with a Luthor, move into a Metallo, add some anti-hero baddies like Lobo.
S-tier guys are the culmination of a multi-movie arc. . .ala Thanos

We going with Superman as the perpetuating of the "model minority" trope?
Thought you guys said that was racist/xenophobic?

James Gunn literally came out and said hes never doing a Superman or Batman origin story.
Some people choose to be miserable

It completely is. And eff him for inserting modern day propaganda in the messaging for a Superman movie.
Posted on 7/7/25 at 11:52 am to Roaad
That’s why I figured Parasite would be a good starter villain.
The very nature of weakening people around him makes Supes vulnerable and keeps drama possible.

Superman was literally created out of the world's politics of the time. he's always been a reflection of what is currently going on.

Dude, when you bitch about everything, people stop caring when you bitch about anything. You’re just a contrarian at this point, but you’re not even monetizing it like your heroes on YouTube are. Get to work!

I think the problem is that it looks like a cartoon.
The Superman cartoons were actually really good though. DC Animated has always been better than their live action movies.
