Gilligan's Island deserved a real ending. That TV movie they did wasn't good and didn't have Tina Louise.

Although i haven’t watched it yet, I’ve been told that Babylon 5 was written with a defined beginning, middle, and end. And they stuck to it.

Justified is the perfect example of how to successfully solve this problem. It began and ended perfectly, and they did not try to force it to continue past its natural due date.

Hell even Justified needs to be trimmed by a 1-1.5 seasons at least. Too much padding is the biggest issue with the show.

It wrapped up beautifully with the S4 finale but then they did S5 which was just a money grab with no plot. But it was great for four seasons.

however, did Seinfeld have this problem? taxi? cheers after Diane left?

You should probably re-read the OP

It specifically says SERIES format TV shows. Not episode types like sitcoms

They don’t always go too long.
A few more seasons of Sons of Anarchy would have been good.

That’s why my wife and I got hooked on BBC shows. They are all about quality over quantity.

They get big names and only have five or six episodes a season

Shameless is the perfect example of this

Shameless is another example of my problem with TV series.

Create a world, and then bend said world to make some sort of social statement. Shameless did this both with the gentrification of the South Side of Chicago, as well has creating a timeline where sometime in Frank's lifetime a white racist character (Mo White) could have been elected as a US Congressperson from THAT district.

Designated Survivor did this too. It created a world where, during the re-election of every senator and congressman, 100+ Independents won in the House and like 30-something Independents won in the Senate - and instead of exploring THAT idea, immediately forgot about it and replaced it with the typical D vs. R rhetoric of todays world (Note: In the world they created, the name of the political game would be to get as many Independents as possible on your side, you don't need anyone to cross the aisle).

Most TV series in the UK are like this. Two or three seasons at most.

Yup.

They kept Doctor Who fresh by basically changing the cast every few years. Companions and the Doctor himself were never around TOO long, with the exception of the 4th who lasted about 8 years.

Breaking Bad was a rare exception. Relatively few seasons, and they could have milked it for a season or two more.

But they kept it tight, just long enough for Walter Wight to complete his descent, with a bit of redemption at the end.

Sopranos went on a season too long. Though it's still my favorite.

This would be one of the FIRST examples I thought of that out stayed their welcome.

Of course! The downvoters were too dense to see the sarcasm.
