The Phantom of the Opera, Broadway’s longest running show, will close in February following its 35th anniversary in January, producers have announced.

“We are sad to confirm that after 35 years on Broadway, Phantom will play its final performance at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday February 18th, 2023,” the show has announced on its website. “Tickets are currently on sale for performances through January 22nd, 2023, and we expect the final block of tickets to be placed on sale shortly.”

The news comes as the musical, known for its falling chandelier, its half-masked title character and its most famous song “The Music of the Night,” has become an icon of Broadway over the decades but has been as susceptible as other productions to the soft Covid market and weak tourist climate.

It is a classic musical and must-see. Every song is good. I've seen it several times including on Broadway. Farewell, Phantom.

It will come back. May take 10 years. But it won’t be gone forever. Too iconic to just disappear

I've seen it 3 times in NOLA, once in Vegas, and once in NY. Gorgeous broadway songs fused with rock to opera to love ballads. Mixes in genre's of drama, horror, romance and comedy. Had amazing stage special effects and interactive props. It's the GOAT of Broadway plays, imo.

Which made me sad when Chicago not only beat Phantom to the silver screen but also got the cast & accolades that Phantom deserved.

But what would play at the majestic in its stead? And John’s pizza after the show was always a tradition in my family…this news hurts more than it should.

One of ALW’s best works, if not his best.

I went to Broadway a few weeks back. Every show was packed. They shite is expensive too. Most where $99 a ticket. But Music Man we paid 1200 for 4 tickets to be in the 3rd row.

I thought that Emmy Rossum was very good as Christine. She acted well and had a beautiful voice.

She was the only one of the cast that had any formal vocal training.

I also thought that Patrick Wilson did a good job in the role of Raul. Obviously Gerard Butler was a terrible choice to play the role of the Phantom but I thought the rest of the cast did solid jobs. However, the fact that such a terrible actor was playing the film's most important role really dragged the movie down.

The make-up department and Joel Schumacher also failed heavily with Butler's face when the mask comes off his face toward the film's conclusion. The design of his deformity changes after the big reveal.

I forgot about him. I agree that he was very good. I believe that he's actually sung on Broadway before, is that correct?

Rossum, Butler and Wilson were all solidly competent singers, and it is a rewatchable musical, if based solely on the material alone, but they were all relatively unknown actors with no star power at the time. Minnie Driver probably had the most success in film at the time, and she was arguably, the weakest link. So, if you are casting unknowns, they probably should have just cast actual broadway singers for a musical with epic songs, maybe even the OG Phantom cast.

Whereas, Chicago got an all-star cast (admittedly, for less demanding tunes, which broadens the casting pool):

-Catherine Zeta-Jones
-Renee Zellweger
-John C. Reilly
-Richard Gere
-Queen Latifah
-Lucy Liu
-Mya
-Christine Baranski
-Taye Diggs

Chicago makes $300M worldwide, wins 6 Oscars, including Best Picture, and had 7 other nominations and goes down as one of the best movie musicals of all-time. That should've been POTO's fate. Instead, it made $150M ww, got 3 technical Oscar nominations, wins none and is largely forgotten.

This hardly ever happens. You need big names to appeal to a broader audience, so you cast actors who can sing rather than singers who can act. Hollywood has been doing it for years. In the past, most of the singing was dubbed, i.e. Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story, etc. Also, the original Broadway cast of TPOTO was way too old by the time the movie was made.

I didn't think that Gerard Butler did as bad a job as some say. Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson sang well. I believe that Minnie Driver was completely dubbed, which is no surprise in that her role required operatic-style singing.

I'm very curious to see how the upcoming movie adaptation of Wicked will turn out. Cynthia Erivo has both Broadway and film experience, but she's hardly a household name, at least not on this side of the pond. She's much more well known in her native Britain. She has a fantastic voice and I have no doubt that she will do a great job as Elphaba. My concern is whether or not Ariana Grande has the pipes to handle the role of Glinda. The role doesn't lend itself well to her breathy pop-style vocals, plus she has basically zero acting experience outside of the TV version of Hairspray.

I worked on a small team of folks and we were sent to San Francisco for a few days. We had one free night so we decided to go see the sights and get a good look at the city. One young woman, who had never been to San Francisco before, chose to go see the San Francisco production of Phantom instead. She had already seen it on Broadway and at least one other city. Dumbass.

That’s my Phantom of the Opera story.

I didn’t see it on Broadway, but saw both Phantom and Les Mis in the West End and yeah those two are in their own tier imo.

Your description of Phantom’s genre bending excellence is spot on. I had no prior knowledge of the show, went in completely blind and was blown away. A top notch experience that I’m sure will make a return to Broadway sooner rather than later.

Growing up, every Soccer Mom had that soundtrack. It's like, as Wayne's World said about "Frampton Comes Alive", it was issued in the mail.

I mean you couldn't hop in a minivan with friends eating orange slices without hearing "The Music of the Night."

And you thought naively as a kid, well this infatuation will be over soon.

That was 30 years ago.

Never saw it on Broadway but did get to see it in West End at Her Majesty’s Theatre a few years ago, where it originally premiered. It is iconic. The new US tour is a new production and a watered down crappy version.
