TDK is not going to finish in the number #1 spot this weekend. The Mummy is; it made $15.3 million yesterday
TDK's Friday's Numbers:
Friday's Total - $12,600,000
Overall Total - $363,687,000
It should finish the weekend with around $390 million, which would make it the 8th highest grossing movie of all-time

Yeah, but Titanic made as much in it's 9th weekend as it made in its opening weekend
It also made over $1 million every day for 101 straight days.
It took 19 weeks before it's weekend box office numbers fell by more than 26%. Now a days, a 2nd weekend drop of 40% is considered outstanding. In it's 2nd weekend, Titanic's B.O went UP 24%
It added to its theater count each week for 16 straight weeks
Finished 1st for 15 straight weekends
Finished in the Top 5 for 19 straight weekends
Finished in the top 10 for 26 straight weekends
Just insane longevity

Movie going has changed since Titanic. Hell I remember I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark as a kid in week 54 of its release in theaters. Most movies today open on multiple screens with tons of time choices at all theaters. I can't remember the last time a movie was so sold out that I couldn't see it on the day I wanted to. Lesser movies used to get lots of ticket sales because the main attraction was sold out.

looks like TDK barely edged out the mummy for the weekend with 43.8 mill to 42.4.

"The Dark Knight" will top $500 million, predicted Fellman, who would not speculate on whether it could approach the all-time domestic revenue record of "Titanic" at $600.8 million.
Even if it edged past that mark, "The Dark Knight" would lag behind "Titanic" in terms of actual tickets sold. Admission prices are up more than 50 percent since "Titanic" came out in 1997, according to Media By Numbers. "The Dark Knight" would have to take in about $900 million to match the number of tickets that "Titanic" sold.

Weekend estimates have it $394,887,000 and like Speedy said, 8th all time (domestic)
Top 7 all time
1 Titanic 600,788,188
2 Star Wars 460,998,007
3 Shrek 2 441,226,247
4 ET 435,110,554
5 Star Wars Ep1 431,088,301
6 POTC: Dead Man's Chest 423,315,812
7 Spider-Man 403,706,375
EDIT: Currently $205,901,188 behind Titanic which could come into play if it stays out for 15 more weeks

Just did my part. Went to see it in Amsterdam this past weekend. It got a round of applause in a SOLD OUT theater.

That's why I said wow. Comparitively, DK is KILLING Titanic's numbers right now (in terms of money to-date since its release). But Titanic just slowly and steady rolled at the box office for almost 30 weeks.
And I'm so glad to see that DK will likrly beat out the Mummy.

The new Batpic is holding up so well that it is now virtually guaranteed to smash the $500M barrier too. The road ahead should be promising as late summer megahits that truly please audiences tend to have low declines in August. 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest witnessed a 44% drop in its third outing at number one and its 17-day cume of $321.9M represented 76% of its eventual final. Last summer's The Bourne Ultimatum banked $164.7M by the end of its third session which accounted for 72% of its overall cume. At a similar pace, The Dark Knight would go on to approach the neighborhood of $520M for an astonishing box office run.

It really started dominating in terms of all-time box office with it's 4th weekend, (which is TDK's next weekend). It owns the record for the largest 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, etc, etc weekends of all-time. And the majority of those records are by significantly LARGE numbers.

What season did Titanic release in?
Posted on 8/4/08 at 7:15 am to L S Usetheforce
It opened in the middle of December. Had it's last $1 million weekend the first weekend of August.
Posted on 8/4/08 at 8:03 am to Augustus
If you look at the most consecutive weekends at number 1 a majority of them are 80's movies. Where there just not a whole lot of movies coming out? I was pretty young so i don't remember.
Posted on 8/4/08 at 9:54 am to barry
The 80's is when it looked like movie-going really took off, and "the blockbuster" was created. I've noticed that in digging through BOM's site for a couple hours over the last few days.
