Watched the first two episodes, and yeah I thought it was really good. The cast is surprisingly good. Especially the guy who plays Robert Evans. He is absolutely nailing it.

Considering the show's devotion to historical accuracy, he'll probably be kidnapped by Patty Hearst

I had to let go of the “reality” and go with this being in a similar vein to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. They started throwing out the cannoli line from the start, even though that was an ad lib and never intended for the movie. It’s as historically accurate as the Bible, but way more entertaining.

Damn what a fricking episode. Typical show stealing presence by Goode/Evans. And of course, everyone else and everything.

Catching up on this series over the last couple nights.

Probably the first time I pretty much agree with what everyone here has already said.

Phenomenal casting.

Some cliches and cheesy writing at times, and the show hits bumps when you compare the fiction to the reality. But once you stop comparing the fiction to the reality and just watch the story, it's a pretty good story. With a great cast that should win some awards.

Only complaint, if I can come up with one, is that they didn't do more with Cazale.

Watched it twice now. Much of it is true.

My only real complaint after 8 episodes is they really try to make Al look like a stud in this series. From taking on the mob, bullying his way into Hollywood, the fearless producers, etc. It’s like he can do no wrong. Even his “mistakes” are painted in an admirable light.

Then I noticed this series is based off of Al’s memoirs. So now I’m a bit jaded on the accuracy of any of this. Sure the historical events are twisted to fit the timeline and narrative, but I was hoping the “behind the scenes” aspect would be true.

I have zero confidence any of this is accurate, but it does make for a fun story. The most enjoyment I get out of it is remembering the actual movies and can’t wait to rewatch I and II after I’m done with the series.

So Ruddy says he made things happen, Carlo says he brought the mob and Ruddy together...

Exactly. Whoever is telling the story looks like man who made it happen. Who can really prove anything after 50 years.

The story I remember before this show came out was Columbo was concerned about the movie but not as a big of a deal the show makes it out. They did have a meeting but it was with a bunch of people from the league.

Not Al getting kidnapped in the street by gunpoint and a one on one sit down with the crime boss as portrayed.

The account I linked goes along with that. Corporate meeting at GW office. It seems more plausible than the sit-down

The Joe Columbo stuff is pretty accurate, according to most accounts.

It was not accurate. At least his involvement with the movie. Yes, Columbo and Gallo had issues to say the least and the mob was not happy with the league. Yes, Joe was shot at a rally.

But Al and Columbo were not friends. They were not having dinner at the house. Joe was not kidnapping Al.

The mob theme was way overblown. For example, Gallo was killed weeks after the movie was released. So the tension of paying Gallo instead of filming in Sicily doesn’t track.

Still an entertaining series. But this series is much more fiction that truth.

"Al Ruddy Saves the Day and Remembers the Little People."

It was a sitcom, with Miles Teller as Samantha from Bewitched. And I think that's probably exploring Teller's range.

I doubt the series will hold up under criticism because of all the fictions and "his girl Friday" cliches. But it was entertaining for the impressions.

This was really the only issue I had with the series.

Obviously there were going to be some embellishments; But the whole Gallo extortion of Al and subsequent asassination of said antagonist ex machina really do nothing for the story and should have just been cut.

Otherwise, phenomenal series and the casting was top notch.

I don’t know I or he would call him tragic but he definitely had some huge ups and downs.

ETA: reviewed his wiki page to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. Yeah not tragic at all IMO. Lived a fast and crazy life and still made it to 89.
