The Odyssey has officially crossed $1 billion at the international box office...

It has become the first non-remake/non-sequel to accomplish this feat since 2009's Avatar. The only other non-remake/non-sequel to do it was Titanic all the way back in 1997.

Lots of those sales are imax sales, which is what I saw it in this weekend and double normal ticket prices.
But even after it’s been out this long, the theater was pretty packed.
Good movie. Lots of flaws.
May not be a sequel but is a well known story.
That said, its main draw is Nolan and the actors

lol are you one of the people on here that said it would flop and wouldn't make back its 750m to break even? Y'all still cant admit its a success.
No matter how you spin it, its now made over 700m in profit. That's ridiculous and a major studio would be thrilled if they did that in a whole year.

By the time it’s box office run is done, it will be the highest grossing r rated movie by more than 500 million dollars, and people will still be downplaying its success.

Pointing out that more sales are higher prices than normal viewings is actually hurting your argument.

I have no dog in this race of bullshite surrounding this movie, but I guarantee you with Hollywood Accounting this movie will not have made over $700MM in profit.

This movie is the quintessential example of all time showing that no publicity is bad publicity.

Are we talking true IMAX, because there's only a handful of those 70mm theaters around (closest one to me, in a major metro, is about 1 1/2 hours away for instance)?
Even your regular IMAX at most theaters have limited screens compared to a "regular" theater screen. So you're talking about double ticket prices but half as many seats.

According to Google AI, The Odyssey has sold between 85-90 million tickets around the world thus far. By comparison, The Dark Knight Rises - Nolan's previous highest grossing film - sold between 135-145 million tickets worldwide back in 2012.
Inflation definitely plays a role in these numbers.

No. I was excited to see it, actually. I think I said something about how I didn’t give a frick about multiracial casting and that it looks great, actually, and am not surprised by it doing well.

Not in the case of most sequel type movies. A lot of what OP is talking about are these big marvel type tent poles, which often do not revolve around big star power, but rather make big stars out of actors.
Hemsworth was not a huge draw. Holland was not a draw. Hell, Downey Jr was not a draw.
Now all those guys put asses in seats.
And hardly anyone knows the directors for those movies (or any movies) unless that director is someone like Scorsese or Nolan or Tarantino. Basically no one knew the Russo Brothers until after Civil War and even then I bet you could ask any number of random people on the street and they wouldn’t know them, but they will have heard of Nolan.
And Matt Damon.
So… yeah. The main draws of this movie are not that it’s a sequel but that people know the director and star.
Which is more to the OP’s point and why I responded as I did.

Yep. Good movie. Deserves to be seen and should have its success, but there’s some other things behind it that have pushed the numbers up.

Not really. You only need to half the tickets to make the same money. Which is exactly what RollTide pointed out later in this thread.
