Hard to believe this, Ace Ventura, and Dumb and Dumber were all released in the same year less than 10 months apart.
The movie bounces from legitimate action to slap stick to drama seamlessly.
I think what makes it so great is the movie is absurd but the characters take each scene seriously. Todays comedy everyone and every situation is so over the top every second the movie suffers IMO.

Diaz never rally looked the same in any film after this and I never could tell why, but now I realize it's because, once she became an overnight star, she proceeded to lose about 15-20lbs and lost much of her "glow" that she had in the Mask.
Look how much different she looked in just 4 or 5 years during Charlie's Angels.

Probably her agent telling her she had to be super skinny to keep getting big roles in Hollywood, causing her to end up losing her curves.
That or the environment there caused her to get an eating disorder.
Neither would surprise me.

That’s just different lighting and wardrobe. She isn’t 20 pounds lighter there because she’s probably 120 in the mask role

One of the biggest examples of the power of the casting couch in Hollywood is Cameron Diaz. She had ZERO acting roles prior to being cast in the Mask. ZERO. No TV, No theater, No movies, No college theater. ZERO. And in the opening credits it says INTRODUCING CAMERON DIAZ. It is well known in the industry that she was a high priced escort prior to getting this role.

well if she slept her way into the role, and we got to see more of her - I for 1 appreciate the casting director taking one for the team

Yeah, she’s definitely not 15-20 pounds lighter.

Whatever she did...it worked.

Well she was beautiful. And that's a qualification for a movie star.
And the casting couch was rumored to be at the root of other famous sirens (most recently JL)

I still watch the Cuban Pete scene every so often. It is so funny

The Mask is absolutely perfect at what it did, which is basically make a real life version of a cartoon.
Carrey's ridiculousness was perfect for the role. Peak Diaz. Solid story. Fantastic SFX. Etc.
It's great.

Michelle Pfeiffer has always been rumored to have been an escort prior to stardom.

She was 21 during The Mask. It's called losing baby fat.

And I know our society tries to deny it, but 21 is basically peak physical condition for women.

I've always noticed the same thing. She was like a completely different person in The Mask. I know chicks change a little bit as they go through some years but her whole face changed in just a couple. It was like she went from early 20s to mid 30s overnight
