I just don’t think that is a half star show in a bubble.

Some half star reviews:

“As expected… failure”

“I hope He money loss for Amazon is going to be unforgettable because they hardfricked my sweetest child memories with this awful political-minded show. frick you all the ones who love this Amazon adaptation, you’re the problem. Peace out”

And these are pretty typical.

The thing is, outside the casting there isn’t much political about this show. It’s not like they’re talking about abortion, Trump, or wealth inequality. The only “political” part is the black actors.

I also only watched the first episode. The episode works so hard to mimic Peter Jackson's visual style and tone that I don't understand how anyone could feel this way.

Agreed.

After the build up of gloom and doom here I admit I was surprised its not bad. Solid B so far.

I’m about 50/50 on this show right now. I’m going to continue it but it doesn’t have me very interested in what’s next nor is there a character I really like. HOTD is much more interesting to me especially with Daemon’s character and a girl who has the potential to help us forget what they did to Danny.

Obviously that is a subjective statement

You want him to define a feeling?
What's wrong with asking that? And 'doesn't feel like LOTR' isn't necessarily bad, Silmarillion doesn't either.

This series seems to be looking at things from a different perspective. LOTR is from a hobbit's eyes, as influenced by what Bilbo taught them... the Elves are elegant and wondrous in that. Sam says "I want to see the Elves!" like a kindergartner getting a treat. Everything in that novel is presented as strange and overwhelming and glorious, from Rivendell, to Rohan, to even seeing the enemy forces marching with Mumakils.

That POV isn't here. The Elves know themselves, so the other Elves don't see Galadriel and you get a WOW impact. Elrond is like "hey, bud", etc. Some care for her, some think she's too intense, but nobody reveres her.
The Menfolk don't revere the Elves either, as those left in Middle Earth are basically being occupied by them. They call them Pointy's.
The Dwarves don't either, they are separate and have their own realm established, and thus far have been largely untouched by the Wars of the past Age.

I like It.

I’m not expecting anything as good as the LOTR but that’s because they aren’t working with as good of source material.

Eh. Until they find a strong male lead, it’s going to feel forced with all these women being the smart, strong, interesting roles in a Tolkien world that is known for the opposite.

Just watched episode 1. The look is pretty good and is in line with the Jackson movies, not that I needed for it to be. Either way, it looks very good. The black hobbits are just black hobbits. It's a bit out of place (see SFP's description from the other thread), but it doesn't really hurt anything.

So far, every white male character is either effeminate or stupid, or both. But that's just episode 1 and I'm sure that changes. Right? The black elf seems to only exist for the 'guess who's coming to second breakfast' scenes, so I hope that gets way more interesting soon.

Galadriel is just fricking awful. Both the actress and everything they have her say and do is just awful. It gets comical sometimes, and we even get a couple of Xena Warrior Princess fight maneuvers. She seems to exist in a perpetual state of pissy zeal, and I guess I'm supposed to believe she's just going to swim 1000 miles back to ME, lol. Honestly, she's really the only glaringly bad thing. Unfortunately, she's the central character, so it might prove fatal.

I'll watch episode 2 later.

Levels of power, is what I mean. She is the greatest healer in the world. She told a castle to collapse, and it did. . .so that would constitute a nuking.

quote:

Gandalf is the second/then most powerful Wizard on earth and the still swings a sword. He doesn’t go around blasting fireballs.

There is a reason for that, though. Gandalf isn't allowed to use all of his power.

quote:

Sauron is one of the most powerful beings in the world and he still has armor and swings a big fricking mace around.
Different kind of power

Same. I only watched EP1 and I really didn't like Galadriel (the character, nor the actress) and no one seemed compelling like Daemon from HOTD.

We shall see. I typically gives shows 3 episodes and if they don't grab by then, I typically bail, unless I hear later on that it picked up later.

When someone says, "it doesn't feel like Friday" nobody asks "what do you mean?"

Because the person doesn't know what they mean, that's why it is a feeling.

Episode two bring the guys back into things.

Elrond gets to show he’s actually competent. His interactions with Oren are some of the best parts of the show.

The stranger is going to be fun.
Hal brand should be interesting too.

It showed he was ignorant to how dwarves think and feel. The interactions were good though. We already knew he was competent.

This is all forward looking. Like I said, it has to happen and soon or it’ll really feel wrong for this world.

1) Why would Galadriel need or want armor or a sword? That's like giving an ICBM nuke, a gun turret

If anyone was paying attention in Episode 2, it's clear that he's in love with Galadriel.

But if they did you could say “I dont Feel any of the relief or excitement you usually get at the end of the work week”

Because people can describe feelings, espcially when they are taking about how a piece of media like a show or movie.

And honestly I know it’s impossible to come off like I am Not challenging them, I’m just genuinely interested in why people feel that way.

Luthien did the same thing in “of Beren and Luthien” by using its spoken keys.

This concept is pervasive among magical castles in a middle-earth. Christopher Tolkien even felt the need to explain why Finrod could not just collapse the tower he was being tortured in.

"With the entry of Felagund into the eloping legend and the Elvish watchtower on Tol Sirion captured by the Necromancer, the spell is displaced: for it cannot be thought to be the work of Felagund, who built the fortress, since if it had been he would have been able to pronounce it in the dungeon and bring the place down over their heads -- a less evil way for them to die." - Christopher Tolkien, Lost Tales 2

Also, Fëanor is maybe the most powerful else of all time, and no one bats an eye at him having armor and a sword because he doesn’t need it.

It’s a Liberty for sure but not an insane one.
