it showed that some mysteries aren't mysteries and are just tactile malfunctions of every day life...which are being amplified after the event.

this is contrasted with the possibility that his dad isn't crazy and is talking to some non-human entity (and the mystery dog killer is not a figment of his imagination). not everyone can be "right", and we have no idea who is right and what fantastical explanation of the event is correct (if any that have been presented are)

...but the mystery of the bagel? nothing major and a fake crisis...just like every non-correct explanation/meaning of life

Your post pretty much sums up this show.

And I don't think we've had any explanation about why the chief's son is working for that weird Bryan guy and old lady right?

no but we have a better understanding of the cult itself, so we can just guess he was seeking meaning

...

like everyone else

obviously it's been implied that Johnson's cult, is the one thing that is full of shite

For all of you thinking about quitting already, I have heard that the next episode is where things really get going. No idea if that's true or not, but I'm waiting to see.

I agree. The only chance this show has is to completely depart from the book and have aliens or something else show up and claim responsibility for taking everyone and at that point the show would be able to explain the relationship between those still here and what they feel they must do in order to be "chosen" for the next round.

If there is one thing that writers and producers continue to do, that is befuddling to me, it is to fail to understand that audiences DO NOT ever like unsolved mysteries. There is a small segment of the population that can tolerate and enjoy shows that have no closure but the vast majority of the population hates it and in order to have a successful show you must appeal to the masses.

Exactly.

But I just don't see this show having staying power. It could be renewed for S2 but there's no way it's going to last. Even Boardwalk (albeit one of HBO's stronger shows for sure) is ending with 5 seasons.

At least the show is getting realistic. A cop who kills dogs. Now this is a storyline I can see going somewhere.

I am kind of torn as to whether continue with this show. The bottom line is that the show maked me feel kind of depressed, it's not a fun show at all.

As for last night's episode, a few observations. We got confirmation that the Chief wasn't crazy. The mystery dog shooter guy is real, his daughter saw him, took the 6 pack of Bud from him and afterwards asked who that was. Now, the guy is still strange, just giving the Chief a $40,000 pickup, but we at least know he is real. Looking forward to a little dog hunting over by the middle school next episode. The scene at the end with the bagel was confirmation the Chief wasn't crazy. It was a mechanical malfunction.

As to the dog hunting, these dogs aren't "our" dogs anymore. I took this to mean these dogs were owned by people who disappeared and hav enow gone feral. You can't have roving packs of feral dogs roaming the streets taking down wild game. A legitimate roll of the police Chief is take care of things like this. I would fully expect he should go dog hunting to eliminate any threat to the kids at the middle school.

Chief's dad is clearly crazy. He was talking to an invisible person.

The Guilty Remnant cult is creepy, but aren't most cults. I think Liv Tyler is sucked into the cult now, she's didn't leave, she went to go chop down the tree and finish the job.

I think the Hugging Bryan dude is the best storyline of all. FBI raids, a mysterious healer. I remember him talking about the 3 year grace period is up. What's going to happen after the grace period? Is that asian girl really that important? Or is this more end of the world, cult hysteria? One thing for sure, the Chief's kid is in deep doodoo for killing a Federal Agent.

If the next episode doesn't pick up steam I think I am out. I don't think it will either. Looks like it will focus on that preacher guy who hands out the flyers. The episode will progress his character but I doubt it progresses the plot of the show. Which is the real question, what is the plot of the show, where is it going? If all it does is drop us into these characters lives for a while, well, that doesn't seem too riveting.

I agree with you on that. It's pretty heavy to watch, especially since it's a summer show.

I don't get this reasoning. Summer is just another season if you're not in school. Not like I'm on summer break. I just sweat more in the suits I wear to work.

He loses a sock in the dryer. Hopefully, we will find out what actually happens to the missing sock, but I am not optimistic.

The raid on the "black guy likes Asian chicks" cult was insane. The feds were straight out murdering people.

I went into this series totally blank and I think I'm keeping my expectations even. Enjoying it so far. I like the weirdness. Also have always kinda liked Theroux's scrappy humorous style since Mulholland Dr. (even though I didn't realize it was him during E1 - looks like he's gained weight). I think I'll be ok with whatever they throw at us as long as the two young lads in the Prius get laid before it's all said and done. Rooting for those guys.

Usually summer shows are 'fluffy'/cheesier compared to the shows that come on during the year. This show is just weird. HBO goes from having a great lineup with Game of Thrones, Veep, and Silicon Valley to True Blood (which is finally ending) and this show. I don't see why they couldn't put a better show in the summer spot when there isn't much competition.
