Careful, a certain UGA poster will accuse you of being a pedo if you don't agree that Bella Ramsey is a great actress and is perfect as Ellie.

I haven't been able to catch up on the thread yet...what are the consensus thoughts?

I liked the episode. Like the angle of the zombies getting more intelligent.

I absolutely couldn't believe that they busted that pipe open and saw vines and shite and not a single person was concerned that it could be part of the cordyceps shite. That was egregiously bad.

The gay stuff seems overly forced and not realistic at all. But I guess some of that shite is in the game so it's whatever. It just feels unnatural the way they do it.

They seem to be Mary Janing Ellie up a ton.

Keeping her immunity a secret is egregious as well. She could damn well save humanity, but let's not because...reasons.

Some of yall have never met a lesbian.

For some reason it’s a dime with a woman that looks like a man the majority of the time. It’s not like the videos yall watch late at night

I mean... I think they're not teling people because they found out that it would require killing Ellie to make the cure? And they don't want to open up that possibility?

That and the fact it seems that not a ton of people in their community are getting infected anyway. They seem to be more hunters of the infected than hunted

Sure, that was the Fireflies' version of it. But seems like her blood (or whatever else) could be an overall good and be used without having to kill her. That's all I'm saying.

I know that Joel didn't want to sacrifice her for a cure.

Who was Catherine O'Hara's husband? Did I not remember that from season 1 or has it not been revealed yet?

Then comes the revelation that Gail bears anger towards Joel because he killed her husband, Eugene, a character from the games we'll eventually meet on the series by way of The Matrix and The Sopranos actor Joe Pantoliano. Gail acknowledges Joel had no choice, which leads us to believe Eugene was perhaps bitten by infected. Whatever the circumstances, it adds another layer to an already intense scene of Gail trying to get Joel to reveal what he did to make Ellie (Bella Ramsey) so furious with him. (If you need a refresher, look no further.)

Rumor is Eugene will be in an episode similar to episode 3 of season 1

Short recap of everything that has been talked about: Ellie is ugly.

Agreed. As soon as I saw it I was like yep, there's stuff in there

It's not done well. "I'm a hot straight girl and though we seemingly have had no physical attraction before I'm just going to start making out with you in front of everyone in a church."

Mary Sue'ing maybe? Haven't seen them smoking much weed But yea, she is about to start whipping everyone's arse.

Seems a lot of complaints could be the result of the inherent challenges when making a TV series based on a video game. Many of the concepts simply don’t translate well. Obviously the showrunners were given the latitude to make the story more adaptable but seems like they didn’t take advantage as much as they could. Guessing they consider gamers the more important audience. But are gamers even satisfied enough in this case?

Ellie just brings this show down so much for me, and it has nothing to do with her looks. I just kinda hate her dumb character, and the dramatic stuff is a huge snooze fest.

*have never played the game

Eh, I get the impression it’ll be more of a flashback episode like the previous one. Not necessarily the same content.

A vast amount of homeowner sewer problems is pipes full of roots. If you were working on the pipe you would think oh there my problem and move on.

It did seem like a Chekhov gun situation the way they showed it.

They saw all the LOU porn “sprouting” up based on the game and said we’ll fix their asses.

I'm trying to remember back to the end of season one. Did Ellie and Joel have a falling out? I can't remember. After the credits the show runner just made it seem like Ellie was being this way just because she's a teenager. Feel like I missed something.

I'm not a gamer, but if this show is a faithful adaption to the game I can't imagine playing a game and just having the main character be the most miserable character imaginable. Sounds awful.

Ellie in the game (Part 1/season 1) is disobedient/defiant, often doing exactly the opposite of what Joel tells her. She’s fairly foul-mouthed and kind of has shite for manners (growing up in a pretty rough post-apocalyptic life will do that I guess). She’s generally a pain in the arse for Joel. At the same time, she has an endearing quality that makes you/Joel care about her survival. Underneath the rough exterior she’s just a kid.

It’s part of the reason so many people thought Kaitlyn Dever would be great for the role - Ellie is very similar to Dever’s character in Justified. Ruth in Ozark is a similar character in the same vein (but I would say Ellie is more endearing than Ruth).

Ellie in Part 2 of the game/season 2 of the show is indeed a lot less endearing. She’s more capable, more independent (like 4-5 years have passed), more bullheaded/reckless, and generally less likable.

So with all that, it makes sense that Ramsey would portray Ellie as more of a shithead in season 2. The general progression is accurate. The problem is that the place where Ramsey started in season 1 (on the overall likability scale) is probably where she should be now in season 2. Basically season 2 Ellie should look more like Ramsey in season 1, and season 1 Ellie should have been a lot more likable. Hopefully that makes sense.

FWIW I’ve been on the “Bella Ramsey was a terrible casting decision” train for a while now. I tried to give her a chance in season 1 and there were times where she almost pulled it off, but the bad has outweighed the good IMO.
quote:

I was excited for this despite being on the fence about season one, but that was just a bland episode imo that really the only thing that it accomplished was make me hate the main character even more.

Part of this is their decision to split Part 2 into 2 seasons. I can understand why they did it; there’s a lot of ground to cover and it would be tough in a single season. However, the slow start is a consequence of that decision. I do think it will pick up fairly quickly, but I agree it was a fairly boring first episode and I think they may lose some viewers as a result.

You know how when you play a video game, sometimes there’s a short prologue at the start where you run around doing mundane shite to get the hang of the controls? That’s basically the part of the game that this episode covered.

I know that’s probably more game discussion than some folks would like but I’ve tried pretty hard to avoid any possible spoilers here. If y’all think it’s a problem let me know and I’ll STFU.
