Are these a certain type of infected / zombies, or in this world, is this how all zombies act? Trying to get a feel for whether it is established / accepted that all zombies in this world are blind and can only hear. This doesn’t seem like it was the case early on when people first turned, but maybe you only become this after you’ve been a zombie for long enough?

From what I've read (in episode review posts with no spoilers) and what other posters seem to confirm is that Clickers are just further along in the infection/been infected longer, not two completely different type of zombies.

I'm excited to see one of them that is probably a "boss" in the game. They showed a peak of one in the trailer and it's huge and really creepy looking.

And so these things are sorta linked or can talk to each other through the vines or whatever.

Yea after the credits they explained it a little bit that they went a little more scientific with it than the game did. The game creator and show runner kind of confirmed that. They said that fungus can essentially communicate in a way to a connected spore from a distance away and they went with that theory to have the zombies interconnected.

That Tess ending was narly and genuinely gut-wrenching, even if it was obvious from the moment she came back that she’d been bit. When that zombie dude slowly gave her the kiss of death I was shocked at how much it turned my stomach, both sad for her but also a horrible way to go.

Completely agree

That and I think her bombing comment also was designed to:

-make sure the seriousness and quickness with how could spread hit home for the viewer. If a scientist wants to bomb her country over 14 people missing, we’ve got a problem

-also established bombing as a way to try and contain the spread, which then connects to the bombed out Boston

Also thought a heard getting rid of the spores was also due to the show runners not wanting their actors wearing respirators/masks all the time.

Right, that's exactly my point. ? ?

The zombie was crawling toward them, then Joel shot it, then it dies and the fungus attaches itself to the zombie and the horde awakens.

As previously mentioned the network thing is new and not in the game so this is not a game spoiler.

My interpretation was this. Tess and Joel explained earlier in the episode that patches of the fungi can attach to groups of infected and grow for miles underground creating a network and hive mind. It's impossible to know how large a specific network can be.

The fireflies that were infected in the capital were not connected to that patch of the network. When the tendrils connected to the dead infected that Joel shot, it knew its host was recently killed. You have to remember that when you "kill" an infected, you are simply incapacitating its host but the fungus is still alive inside of it as depicted in the opening scene at the lab.

So newly infected firefly gets shot by Joel.

Tendrils from the previously seen network connect to it, senses the host is dead and sends its runners to investigate.

The showrunners mentioned this after and I can't remember exactly what they said. I think one of them mentioned that it would be harder to get the audience to buy into this too.

A building isn’t just going to fall over because of 20 years of no maintenance. This isn’t idiocracy.

I think its fairly believable that tons of bombing, plus the network of vines and and spores overtaking and decaying the buildings over 20 years could lead to them falling over.

It isn't just the 20 years, buts its the 20 years plus them being covered in the living/moving vines.

As they mentioned, in the game, the fungus spread mainly through spores and the show runners thought that was silly.

Silly because they couldn't show it effectively or "cool", I imagine.

Spores make 1000x more sense than zombie attacks.

Stopping a zombie outbreak would be relatively easy in real life.

Stopping spores would be incredibly difficult

my only minor complaint about the episode is why wouldn't they explain to Ellie that they could hear but they couldn't see BEFORE they were face to face with some of the clickers

minor grump, i know

I think some can see like the one at the end with the "kiss" and others have fungus head taking out the eyes.

om what i understand they are a hive mind linked by the vines that go undergrounds but seem to be isolated to a specific area not every single infected in the entire world.

This. Remember before they went inside the museum they saw that the vine outside was dead so they were certain that all the connected zombies inside were also dead, which they were. Save for those 2 clickers which seem to operate differently or may just not have been connected to that one group.

I imagine also that Pedro especially was not interested in wearing a mask for another show.

Doubt that was an issue. The decision had likely already been made before they casted Pedro. If he didn't want to do it, just find someone else.

Nah, bites still spread them in the game too. The whole tentacle aspect was not in the game. Like the shite coming out of their mouthes. Reminds me of that vampire show from a few years ago

The showrunners changed it for a few reasons. They didn't want the actors to wear gas masks most of the time and wanted to make the outbreak "more realistic". They said that since COVID, the average viewer is more aware of how viral infections spread and spores would infect everyone quickly, leaving nobody unaffected.

Definitely recommend the podcast.

For the first episode I re-watched after listening and I think I’ll do it again here.

They hit on what the prologue was designed to do and discussed in detail Tess’s ordeal.

I don’t care about the game so much, but one deviation was that in the game, they were also fighting FEDRA at the statehouse. In Mazin’s view it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for them to be out there. In his view they’d patrol the QZ and the buffer zone, but they wouldn’t be out in the open city as what’s the value?

I think you’re missing the joke. Pedro apparently wasn’t happy about having to wear the helmet in Mando so much even if having it on all the time was a major part of the character.

I wish they had kept it as Fedra. I understand why they changed it but it makes more sense to keep it Fedra.

In the game, it wasn’t a random patrol. Remember, in the show and the game, Joel and Tess just murdered some Fedra officers. They’re out there looking for those murderers. Also it helped cement why they can’t easily just go back

I think that its kind of awesome, and cool looking, the mushrooms growing out of their heads, and bodies. I think that fungus is incredibly fascinating though, and I love finding gnarly looking mushrooms in the wild.
