Yeah, could've been cool and it was a pretty awesome introduction to Bill. Beheaded a runner like a beast
The banter between Ellie and Bill could have helped contrast with the devastating reality of the world they live in and maybe even help endear Ellie to us a little. She still is basically resting bitch face on the show. A little humorous banter would have gone a long way.
Oh well.

Episode was OK. In the game, Ellie and Bill's interactions are great, so it's a but disappointing that they changed that

"Limited number of actors" is the only part of this that is true.
At this point, you're arguing just to argue. If you want to argue that this episode was expensive compared to the rest of the show, have at it. It wasn't, but go ahead.

idk man the way he interacted with Frank ("he's the only one who would wear that shirt") and the note Frank left reading like there had been a lovers quarrel, combined with the gay porno mag; it wasn't outright stated but we can say it was very heavily implied he was in more than a platonic relationship with Frank.
I agree with all this. Their relationship is implied.

Did Joel load up on weapons/ammo in the bunker? Why in the world wouldn't he? Maybe we find out next ep?
Seemed like he was just leaving it all. I know the girl grabbed that pistol from the mail drawer but thats all we were shown.
They made it seem like he wasn't going to grab any, but maybe he just meant she couldn't grab any.
If he didn't get any, that's extremely weird and borderline insane.

Neither of us knows this to be true at all. No matter what it cost, it was too expensive for an episode that barely moved the plot at all (and only if we're being generous).
Since the "next week preview" shows them crashing the truck, it seems anyone could have skipped this one completely and just moved right on to next week without missing any portion of the story at all.

My wife was like "WHY WAS HE STANDING IN THE STREET???" It's like they consulted with literally no one for that scene.
IMO it’s continuing to show how shite Hollywood is. It’s because they completely had to fabricate this part of the story.

The reason the game handles this better is because at the end of the day, Bill is an ancillary character. His purpose to help facilitate and further the story of Joel and Ellie.
We learn everything about Bill that we need to in the game. The background information about his past with Frank was the perfect dosage. It's not overshadowing our main characters, yet at the same time provides some insight into this man's life and what he was going through after civilization crumbled.
The reason the show gets it wrong is because it decides, just 3 episodes into the show, to completely sideline the main characters for an hour and focus on this ancillary character's romantic life. The plot becomes suspended, we see very little of the characters we were told to invest in, and instead we're shown the romantic life of two characters that ultimately we will never see again.
You don't do that 3 episodes into a new show. You just don't. It kills all previously established momentum. If Bill was in a heterosexual relationship with a woman, it would have been just as bad. Nothing changes. But that's the point - if Bill was straight, and they kept him straight, this kind of episode would have never been approved. Because it would have been recognized as bad design. You don't give side characters with no future in the franchise an entire 1+ hour episode while your main characters are sidelined and the plot is paused, especially on just the 3rd episode of the very first season.
But we know why it was ultimately done this way. The desire to prominently show a gay relationship between two older men took precedence over honoring events of the game and maintaining a sound pace and overall structure for the show.

Came to see people melt about a gay relationship being shown. Sure enough, I was not disappointed.
They said this was the furthest deviation from the game so far, and it just had to be a queer fest.

Episode should have been named “Tampons, TP, and All you Can Eat Blowjobs”
Or “Romeo and Romeo”
Or “Romeo and Romeo”

Ellie literally steals a gay porno from Bill, it’s pretty damn obvious
That really isn't obvious at all if you think about it for more than 2 seconds.
yeah imjustafatkid watches gay porn all the time doesn't make him queer!

The series is INTENDED to EXPAND upon the game.

Should have kept reading the thread. You wouldn't have made such a stupid comment.

I stand by my statement.
I've seen enough of your insufferable posts to know nothing else would make a difference.

Evidence Bill actually looked at gay porn? I'll wait.
I have a can of creamed peas in my pantry. That must mean not only do I eat creamed peas, but I enjoy eating it, too. Couldn't just be there because a family member brought that shite over for Thanksgiving and I left it off the menu, or I accidentally grabbed the wrong can while grabbing 5 cans of Bean & Ham and that can was misplaced among the ones I wanted, or my wife eats that slop while I hate it.
I must love creamed peas. Because you KNOW, not because you inferred it. You people are as exhausting as the religious nut in the Runners' thread

I'm pretty swayed by actual evidence and truth, so clearly this is false.

It just really isn't shocking that someone who is living in an apocalypse and trades for things would find something like that and keep it, even if it isn't appealing to them. I'd trade that to some perv for some bullets/food/lumber/etc in a heartbeat. Doesn't mean I'm into it.
I'd also hoard any feminine products I might find. I'd keep anything that's small and could be bartered. Medicine, magazines, hygiene products, things like that would be hot commodities as the years drag on.

And yet this episode didn't expand upon the game. It cut from the game.
Where was the epic fight in the school with the Bloater? Where was the fun banter between Ellie and Bill? Where was the ambush by the flood of Runners?
Expanding upon the game means capturing the events of the game and building all of it out further with additional dialogue and context. This episode cut an entire sequence of events simply to showcase a homosexual relationship between two characters that we will never see again.

i was one of the heavies in the early days of the runner's thread, but backed out after i got burned out in 2020. haven't clicked on it in 2 years out of shame. what's going on in there?
i'm a christian, but very rarely did that come up during that thread, nor did i find it the appropriate place.

So it cut some action scenes, there will be plenty of that to come
