The story clearly communicates that Ellie is humanities only chance for survival and that there's an extremely high probability for a cure
Exactly, and I think Ellie knew there was a possibility that she would die for that. I think that is where Episode 7 comes in. She accepted she was going to die. She didn't, had to kill her best friend instead. Survivors guilt. So she was alone, no purpose. Marlene gives her a purpose. I also believe Marlene was straight up with her that she might have to give her life to save humanity.

Could they not just create another Ellie?
Marlene had to put it together that Ellie was immune because her mother got bit.
They could sacrifice another pregnant woman to experiment. Just a thought, unless I’m missing something else.

The only thing I can say in slight defense of Joel is I don’t know if Ellie knew all along that she’d have to sacrifice herself to save everyone.
There is no defense of Joel. Everyone on the Inside the Episode said that being the cure was her purpose in life, and Joel betrayed her and took that from her.
When he tells her they can just turn around and go find Tommy, she literally tells him she is seeing this thing through to the end.
The only reason Joel has somewhat of an out is because the Fireflies didn’t give Ellie a choice. The problem with this, is that Marlene told Joel they could let Ellie decide. He proceeded to murder her anyway, then lie to Ellie.
That cancels out any idea that Joel did the right thing and is a hero. The guy is a psychopath and did what he did for his own selfish reasons. He couldn’t lose Ellie.
quote:
I still think Joel is the villain overall
Don’t know how anyone could see it any other way.

Because it’s not that black and white. Technically, the whole bunch are villains for things they’ve done in current day and the past to survive.

How do we know that wasn’t Marlene just trying to get Joel to put Ellie down? Just as good of a chance that she shoots Joel and then they operate on Ellie while she’s still under anyway.

Marlene never gave her that option.
Marlene was willing to let her decide. Joel wasn’t. That’s why Marlene is dead. The whole thing is stupid anyway because Marlene shoulda just killed Joel as soon as he acted up.
She assassinated her lifelong best friend. Knowing what kind of person Joel was, there is no way she lets him walk out after he basically told her what he was gonna do.

She killed her friend as she was in the process of turning into a fungus monster. It's hardly an "assassination"

Guess we know what you’re doing in the event your kid is taken hostage by rogue “doctors” who are going to sacrifice your kid without their or your consent because they “maybe” can find a cure.
I think he did what any parental figure would do in that situation.
One, she wasn’t his kid. Two, he knew what she wanted. She told him. Joel did what he did for himself, not for her. He knows it. She knows it. The actors playing the characters know it. The show creator knows it. Joel is the villain.
By the way, awful convenient of Joel to wake up, murder a bunch of people, and get to Ellie right before doctor started operating. Reminds me of episode 8 when he comes out of his coma just in time to get up and become a badass again.

Sir it’s a tv show based off a video game. Nobody wants the story of the hero who woke up too late.

No, I understand what they were going for there. But the way the actress played that scene, that was an assassination. Ellie’s mom tells her to take baby. Marlene basically tells her lifelong best friend frick you and your baby.
Then Marlene takes baby but says she can’t kill Ellie’s mom so she just gonna leave her there to turn into a monster lol. Then charges back in to room, no words, bullet in head.
That’s how you do someone you don’t care about, not your lifelong best friend. Ashley Johnson was great in that scene. I have no idea what the actress playing Marlene was doing.

I didn’t say anything about him getting there late. Maybe just not the cliched arrives at the last second.
Also, Joel’s not the hero.

Yeah, it almost felt like a TV show...

Like others have said, episode was pretty rushed, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Joel absolutely did the right thing. They drugged her, and were going to kill her. You don't do something like that without giving someone a choice. They forced his hand.
I wish Joel would have just told her the truth though. "The Fireflies were going to kill you and take out your brain, so I saved you. I did have to kill people to save you." I think that she would have ultimately been ok with that explanation. I get that Ellie wanted to be the cure, but I don't believe she wanted to sacrifice her life. Now Joel has spun this big lie, and it will inevitably come apart, and Ellie will be even more pissed. At most, he could have just ommitted the part about killing Marlene.

Marlene was willing to let Ellie decide when she was in a disadvantageous position. She wasn't willing to let her decide when she had the upper hand.

A group of terrorists were about to sacrifice a little girl with a procedure theyd done multiple times before which didn’t work.
The hell he wasn’t the hero.
ETA: the show runners cut that part out of the show from the game and I have no idea why. You find audio recordings as you progress through the hospital of them discussing the past failures and how they weren’t sure if this time would work either.

It's amazing how two people can watch the same scene and get two totally different takes from it.
Ellie's mom is begging her to take the baby and end her life. Marlene is obviously hesitant to do both for good reason: one killing her friend, and two having a literal newborn to deal with while she's planning her own side stuff.

I mean she doesn't basically say that at all. I think she's struggling to wrap her mind around the sudden change in plans.

It normal that she has major hesitance blowing her friend away and is probably processing shock, grief, and being handed a newborn baby.

Because that was the only way she could do it. Remove emotion, run in there, and do it without thinking.

Acting like a conflicted human?

Exactly. Couldn’t trust her at that point after she’d revealed herself 15 minutes before

I'm sure I'll catch hell for this because on the M/TV board you have to like every show apparently. But I probably won't watch s2. This show just didn't do it for me.

Strange how Ashley and Bella look so much alike when kids. Coincidence?Posted on 3/13/23 at 10:34 am to landrywasbeast30
So I don't know my overall thoughts on the show other than I was pretty disappointed. I feel like there was an all time great pilot episode that blew me away, one to two more great episodes, and the rest were just meh with one completely useless episode.
As far as last night, it was a meh episode for me. I need to read the thread but was the surgery going to kill Ellie? Because if it wasn't going to kill her, it was the biggest overreaction of all-time on Joel's part. He wants to get Ellie there to help find a cure the entire series but now that they are actually going to try and do it, he wants to murder everybody in the building. Including innocent people that can't be justified.
Marlene also wanted the best for Ellie, and for mankind. Joel only cares about himself and Ellie. You could argue he only cares about himself given how he lied to Ellie and if she willingly went into the surgery. Marlene wasn't some character that I loved, but she also didn't do anything wrong. I can see that being a good ending to a video game, it definitely played out as one, but in fake reality it was pretty dumb.
I couldn't help but laugh though thinking about the poster in the episode 6 or 7 thread that talked about how Hollywood made Joel out to be a pussy. Clearly not the case
Another random though: Man Ellie's mom from the show looked like she could actually be little potato heads mom in real life. They have very similar fascial features. Kind of crazy that it is the girl who was Ellie in the game.

It was made pretty damn obvious that the surgery was going to kill her. I don’t see how anyone can watch that and think otherwise
