Saw it this afternoon. Outstanding treatment of both Asperger's and Homosexuality IMO.
quote:

For all of the distinctly drawn period piece-ness of The Imitation Game, with its English rain, tweeds, tea and understated heroism and humor, the film holds bracingly modern themes that make it both mainstream and groundbreaking in its portrayal of the life of one gay man.

This story of British mathematician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist Alan Turing who played a key role in cracking Nazi Germany's Enigma code is a fresh take on what it means to be a homosexual when you're also smarter than everyone else and have the skills to end a world war.
Contemporary issues like Aspergers, bullying, discrimination, violence and women's rights and oh, a little thing like the discovery of computers crowd the gay rights story here but by no means overshadow its subtle theme of strength and dignity for the LGBT community and the world at large.

Alan Turing is presented in The Imitation Game as a difficult hero whose homosexuality informs but does not define him and indeed helps him become one of those people who no one imagines anything of who does the things no one can imagine.

Him being gay really isn't the point of the movie, and isn't a focus at all.

It's a great movie.

They focused on the gay angle a lot.

I don't think they focused on it a lot at all.

This was far from an "agenda" film. You could call "The Normal Heart" or "Pride" an agenda film. But TMG simply wasn't.

Agree.
The gay angle was neither played up nor down. It was simply addressed as a matter of fact.

True for most of the film, then at the end they threw in all the stats regarding indecency laws in the UK.

The fact that he was gay was hinted throughout the entire film.

The I Love You letter in code, being arrested early on for homosexual sex, then the wedding, the fact that he couldn't out the Russian spy, and then basically the entire ending.

It was certainly a major sub-plot.

As if movies about gays should be lumped into one retarded category

Absurd

Agreed, Carson. It's not like we group movies by hair color ether eg. "What's your favorite brunette movie"?

However, it's hard for some to forget the fact that a character is gay and listen to the story that is being told.

Was there any simulated cocksucking or anal intercourse? Those are pretty important aspects of the lifestyle.

If you are uncomfortable with the gay angle, you think they focused on it a lot. If you're not uncomfortable then you see how it needed to be part of the character development and the story.

Great movie. Just had a thread on here the other day where I said I didn't understand why it was not getting the accolades of the other critically acclaimed shows (yes, some nominations but no wins).

I had no problem with any of the "gay angle" until the very end when in addition to telling you about the guy's future, they just had to hit you over the head with the overall stats on people punished for being gay under the indecency laws, when they were repealed, etc. At that point it became preachy and agenda-driven. Not an issue if they leave the last part out, but they just couldn't pass up the chance the make a statement about how something is wrong that has already been ended and is viewed as wrong by most people today.

I feel like they forced it too much in the sense that they hinted at it about 3 times then told you blatantly another couple of times. I hate when movies consider the watcher too stupid to figure things out. So I was frustrated with the hand holding that the writers did.

Other than that it was a very solid film.
