If you want an example of partisanship, look no further than ROTK's omission. Loved by all audiences AND a Oscar record breaker, yet still not on the list.

City of God is #1, but is at worst in the top 5 somewhere, but not on this list at all. I didn’t even bother reading the rest of it.

Partisanship? It's a list voted on by the 6 critics who write for The Hollywood Reporter. They chose their personal favorites, and it should be okay for their favorites not to include yours, especially since one of your favorites is often considered the worst film in its trilogy.

I don't understand why people on this board get all hot and bothered by such lists. 6 people thought it would be fun to make one. It's not being presented as any kind of canon. If there's shite you haven't seen or heard of, add that shite to your watch list instead of bitching about your basic-arse favorites not being there.

I like many of the films on this list, though only a few would be in my top 50 of the decade. Drug War isn't there! Who cares.

City of god and crouching tiger are 1a and 1b for me as greatest foreign films of all time.

Also, Spotlight should have been on this list as well.

Because they are made to provoke a response, not represent what is claimed. It's called click bait.

while i'm fine with cinema of all sorts and varying opinions, i decided to break it down out of curiosity. i've seen about 35 of the list. i'm not opposed to watching a movie just because it touches on subjects i disagree with hollywood's opinions on.

3 of those movies deal with getting abortions (which is fine.)
a handful deal with race issues (which is fine.)

at least 10 of those are gay centric stories (that's not including the 20+ i haven't seen and don't know anything about,) which means 20% of their films are depicting 3% of the populace.

unless all the people that made the list are gay, they just really wanted a heavy emphasis on gay stuff. power of the dog was good but boring. Hating Brokeback was all the rage at the time, but in hindsight of Last of Us, it's a story of loneliness and well done in many regards.

that being said, Zodiac, Inside Llewyn Davis, Get Out, Boyhood, Wall-E, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are the only non-gay/foreign movies in the top 20. this isn't the poli board despite the intrusions from there. people are ok to call out terrible takes like this list that's detached from reality.

Brokeback is a legit great movie.

I don't think it had an agenda, it's simply a story about 2 down low dudes.

i agree it is, but i'll argue it's about one down low dude and another dude that just got lonely on a cold night, but appreciated the companionship it offered.

it's been almost 15 years, but i was under the impression Heath Ledger's character still loved his wife.

my point wasn't agenda, just that their picks had a large overrepresentation of gay films.

but i'll also argue that gay romance has a different feel and pull than a hetero romance. if a man and woman married to different people fall in love and have sex while out herding sheep and then have to go back to their partners, but still have an attraction to their fellow sheepherder, that's not nearly as compelling.

same thing as Ep 3 of Last of Us. If Nick Offerman saved a girl and they lived together and died happily, it's way less compelling of a story than what happened.

all that to say, gay romance tells a different story than traditional romance, but it's still wholly overrepresented on their list.

Boyhood was such a bore. Interesting concept, but lacked execution and likeable characters so it was a slog by the halfway point.

yeah, it was an interesting concept and i appreciate linklater's creativity and the actors' 12 year commitment, but it was boring, much like his "before" trilogy.

maybe i was just viewing it in light of "tree of life" about a boy growing up in Texas, but boyhood just fell flat to me.

I completely agree with your sentiment. Every time there’s a list 90% of the thread is “list is shite” “omg they have movie x #6 when it’s definitely #5” type of crap comments. However while lists like this are entirely subjective there should be some movies that objectively need to be on a list like this. A top 50 movies of the 2000s plus 10 or so honorable mentions and City of God isn’t on there? No No Country do Old Men? But include Bridesmaids and Black Panther (but not Mad Max Fury Road) undermine the credibility a bit. These are professional critics or journalist not a random website or YT channel

this all the way. Best movie I have ever seen. I understand all these lists are subjective but this movie doesn't get enough credit.

Agreed.

I have no idea what critics saw in that movie. The performances were just okay and the main actor actually regressed in his performance as he got older. I feel like the only reason why it got any attention at all is due to the fact that it was shot over an eleven-year span.

I think that at the very least, it should have been top 10. It would be #1 on my list.
