Jake. I just watched this movie. My response is

Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.
I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Donkey Kong sucks.
You know something? YOU SUCK!

what was the big problem with this movie? it's pretty standard super hero

That's the problem. It's incredibly cliched and by the numbers.

I was more interested in the GL planet than any conflict he had with Saarsgard

The ending was pretty good and the Hal Jordan character was done properly. Thats why Batman dislikes him in the comics. Kinda fed up with these pseudo intellectual comicbook bigots who crap all over your thread but go nuts for things like Dragonball Z.

I thought it was just about average and I really hated the villain. It should have been something smaller and the battle should've been away from earth.

First...I didn't hate it.

But why it didn't work for me:

- Terrible casting of Hal Jordan.
- Horrible villain in Parralax
- Horrible villain in the shitty scientist guy
- Fairly pitiful CGI work...after he saves the day and is saved from plunging into the sun by Sinestro you can actually see Hal's hair blowing in the wind...the solar wind I guess.

The whole thing was just muddled and poorly thought out. It felt like a rush to get a DC character into the theater after Marvel dominating everything but Batman.

Except for Sinestro, GLs Rogues Gallery pretty much sucks...i.e. Tatooed man. Star Saphire,
Gold face...Who would you have used?

Sinestro was actually the best part of this movie... Not sure...I'm not a big GL fan so I don't know his universe all that well. Always liked the Manhunter stuff, but have no idea how that could have worked.

Maybe it could have been as someone else suggested earlier...far more introduction of Abin Sur and the Corps with Jordan coming in mid way and then a dust up with Sinestro?

I turned it on at the end of the movie and it was the most pitiful piece of shite I had seen in a while. The CGI was bad. The acting was garbage. I thought it was a joke. My buddy told me the whole movie was like that so I have never watched it.

1) Too many cooks.

2) Geoff Johns onboard, trying to fit forty years of good GL stories into one movie.

3) Hector Hammond is a third tier villain. Of all of the awesome looking villains in the DCU, they went with a guy with a big head (and even messed up that basic look).

The Manhunters could have made for a fairly decent enemy. It also would have allowed for an in depth look into the background of the GL Corp.

-Not an accurate characterization of Hal Jordan (although Renyolds was capable of doing so)

too much standardized comic movie-not enough to make it unique, structured to similarly to Marvel movies.

- not enough on GLC, and Sinestro in particular.
- too much green screen, would have been better off using real locations for other worlds
-brought the story back to earth to have run of the mill battle, story should have been away from earth.
-the CGI mask.
-the tone of the movie was trying to capture Iron Man 1 and failed.
-a big giant cloud was a big bad,
-Hector Hammond isn't a "head to head" (no pun) villain with Jordan, it's very much a chess match.
-Sinestro "arc" has no conflict.
-Carol Ferris was miscast
-the ring didn't speak
-This was one movie when inner monologuing by the protagonist would have benefited the film.
-The didn't flesh out the universe and The Guardians role well enough-should have started there.
-Abin Sur should have been a bigger part of the movie.

Agree with all of this.

I liked casting Reynolds as Hal Jordan. I just think they completely missed the mark. You just cant do a half origin/ half action formulaic movie about the Green Lantern Corps or you'll get exactly what you got. The movie was very disjointed, the villain was not menacing, and the ending was meh.

I don't know if I disliked it, but I just didn't like it (redundant? ). As in: it was just okay.

I tried to watch it several times before I watched the whole thing...kept losing interest about halfway through for whatever reasons. I finally ended up finishing it about a year or so ago, and it was just okay. Not terrible, but certainly nothing special.

I don't know anything about the comic book or Hal Jordan. But I know nothing about any comic books and besides Fantastic 4 II, this was the worst super hero movie I have ever seen. And I could tell how horrible it was going to be from the trailer.

#1. No one else has brought this up, so I'm probably on my own here...I remember GL being black. Why not cast a black superhero? I'm not a hippie liberal with a diversity agenda but I think the studio missed it big time on this one by not casting a black person as GL. Will Smith would have been huge, not sure if they could have pulled that one.

#2 And speaking of casting Ryan Reynolds, I didn't want to see GL as Ryan Reynolds. I wanted to see Green Lantern. As I said, I knew nothing going in about the superhero, and I still know nothing, because I got the dick showing game guy from Waiting for 2 hours in a CGI costume instead.

#3 As if the casting issues weren't bad enough, the story was stupid. A couple of lost astronauts allow the biggest threat to the universe to escape simply by being there? WHAT? And that dumb-assed premise sets you up for the entire movie.

#4 I hate making intagible arguments, but this movie just had no soul. I wasn't invested in any of the characters. The villain was a yawn, the movie was just meh. It's like they just didn't try very hard. I think a lot of movies do this. They have to realize at some point how shitty the movie is. Pixar had to completely rewrite Toy Story because the first one made Woody look like a total douche. Sometimes you just have to go back to the drawing board. I find it hard to believe that the writers were really pleased with this movie and didn't just say "that's good enough. We'll just CGI the frick out of it and cast some young hotties and everyone will love it."

There are several GLs, but Hal Jordan is the one with all the history. Jon Stewart, the black GL is a relatively minor player in the DCU, and his only claim to fame is being in the Justice League cartoon.

Casting a black actor could have been big, but it would have been a huge risk for what they hoped would be the next big franchise.

I really liked the movie, although I recognize its flaws. It's a shame we won't see the Sinestro sequel it was leading to.
