Similarly I watched Once Upon a Time in America the other day for the first time in I don't even know how long, and was gripped from beginning to end.

Great movie !! Another great one is Once Upon a Time in The West.

Sergio Leone was a master at making great movies...The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a Masterpiece !

After all these years of watching it on TV, a local historic theatre showed this on the big screen.

It was awesome !!!

Downvote away, other than Pacino's thankfully subdued performance, I don't see a damn thing intriguing about this movie. Brando was a cartoon character, I love Jimmy Caan but he's white as hell playing an Italian character. I've never understood the popularity and appeal of this boring arse movie

I mean it's fine if you don't like the movie, people have different tastes, but if you're going to belittle one of the consensus best movies ever made, you need to come with a little more substance in your critiques.

Brando won an academy award for his "cartoon character" role, all 5 minutes of it.

Caan's character was pretty much white. I don't understand that critique.

And while it was "boring" in the sense of explosions and "action", the story and plot was as riveting as can be.

Here are some of the bosses IRL at the exact time Sonny was in the movie. Looks kinda like a bunch of white dudes

Yeah I mean Italian is pretty much considered white now.

Do you know any 1st generation Italians? Many aren't really distinguishable from "white people".

the extra scenes did not add anything to the pictures.

I think the scenes at the hospital when Vito took his boys to see Genco revealed how much tension there was between Michael and his father. The conversation in the hospital hallway made it clear that their relationship wasn’t great at the time. As a matter of fact, without that scene, there really isn’t any dialogue between them until Michael returns from Italy and becomes the Don.

that's how I spelled it when I first saw the movie

When I first heard the name of an eighties starlet: "Pee Isidora? What kind of name is that?"

Don't let anybody fool you either, but The Godfather is a Christmas film... Whether people want to admit it or not.

The key scenes of the whole film take place around Christmas. Plus, for whatever reason, the film is better enjoyed on a cold, crisp December evening in the lead up to Christmas.

But these are Sicilians...

They are supposed to be more...

Well...

Moorish.

More John Turturro and less James Caan.

Turturro's parents came from Sicily...olive skin, tight -curly afro hair.

Google some famous Sicilian mobsters, it's not like he's so far from believable. In that regard, Brando doesn't even fulfill the role.

How is this so unbelievable as Sicilian?

Clearly you do not know anything about Sicily. Many Sicilians are lights complicated with dark hair or blinding hair. I have several relatives that are 100% Sicilian with blond hair and blue eyes , and our families come from Corleone and some little towns near it. The Vikings conquered Sicily around 1000 AD and ruled it for a while. When the moors conquered it, they remained closer to the coast. Many towns in the mountains /interior have less moorish traits and more Viking traits. Also, there was a large Jewish presence in Sicily prior to the Vikings. My point is that Sicily is a true melting pot and has been for 1000 years. Caan was cast pefectly for his role as the charismatic, emotional and violent Santino.

100% Northern Italians who just migrated to Sicily the past two centuries perhaps?

I doubt it considering the family names are etched into the pews in the church and dated, most which are in the 1500s.

It wasn't until I was a student at A&M that I worked with a guy from small town West Texas and found out that there are people who don't consider Italians ''white.'' Of course, growing up in urban private schools, it had never even occurred to me to ponder the definition or standard for qualifying as ''white.''

I like it when hicks show their shite grasp of history and culture.

Ftr, I'm 6'4" and had blond hair as a child. Some of the most common Sicilian surnames are variants on the word for blond. And if you saw my dad, you would probably think he looked Jewish.

A lot of Europeans never held to exclusive practices of inbreeding that so many on this board pride themselves on (in fact incest is frowned upon in some cultures), so people from the same region, town, or even the same family might have different hair and eye colors. Genetics are fascinating.
