I get the overall point, but a big reason you don't see movies like the Godfather made is the Godfather, Godfather II and Goodfellas.
Those movies are some of the best ever made and they define the genre. If you pitched a similar movie nowadays, a serious, period piece about the Mafia in NYC, the first issue would be that it compares to those 3 movies. That's not a comparison new movies can win. They get deemed Godfather wannabes.
It's just tough to get into a genre with a true GOAT movie candidate ruling it, let alone 3. I think Coppola has a point about a shift in marketed movies away from serious character studies, but specific to the genre, GF, GF II and Goodfellas really made it difficult for all future Mafia movies to emerge.

I've never understood the popularity and appeal of this boring arse movie
You must hate Game of Thrones too. 90% of GOT is people talking and planning and scheming. Very similar to the Godfather in that sense.
Meetings, feel outs, then huge amounts of action in 5-10 minutes, then back to planning and feel outs

Just finished watching it again after more than a decade from the last time. It’s even better than I remembered. Hollywood is throwing a lot of pure shite these days. They’ve forgotten how to really create from source material.
No CGI. No changes from the book. Just great acting. Great casting. Great score.
It still stands the test of time.
All-time favorite for me.

And as good as the godfather is, godfather 2 is better.

I view 1 and 2 as the same large story. It is all one great epic.

Godfather no. 3 is a letdown

No it isn't.
It's an abomination!
I'll meet anyone who disagrees at Sonic. They turned Michael into a total crying pussy. Pacino screaming is worse than Sofia Coppola. We expected her to suck. We didn't expect Michael to become whining pussy.

GF 3 is a decent end of Michael’s story. Everything he did in all 3 movies was in a weird way for his family, and in the end he had no family and died alone. Which was the exact opposite outcome that his father had. I think that was the story GF 3 meant to show and it does that well.

Watching again last night and a line struck me from Kaye. She tells Michael she is worried he will become a man like his father. She was worried about the wrong thing. She should have hoped Michael would become a man like his father. What he became was a man that had the dark side of his father, but was even smarter, and did not have the same care for his family. He talked about caring for his family, but his actions told differently.
