And why it’s Stargate SG1. Discuss.

I wouldn't call it GOAT, but I recently completed a rewatch of Farscape and was impressed with how well it holds up. I always thought the visuals were what made it work, and they play a big part in creating a very alien feeling universe, but the main story really is good. They have strong villains and create plausible reasons why the good guys and the bad guys need each other, so it's not like the plot advances because one side was too stupid to kill the other or a deus ex machina saved the day. Both sides are locked in a dance until the end that's pretty entertaining.

What I like about Farscape is that it was not afraid to swing for the fences. They never played it safe on that show. Now, I will admit, sometimes that meant they completely whiffed on an episode and delivered a real stinker, but I give them credit for being willing to take risks. When everything clicked on an episode Farscape was the best Sci-Fi series I've seen. They just couldn't deliver that every single episode.

I would put DS: 9 up there too, for the same reasons in that they took some risks that paid off big time but had some real stinkers. The Expanse has been very solid. I really like Stargate SG1 but I think in the later seasons, as Richard Dean Anderson became increasingly checked out, the quality often dropped.

Farscape and Warehouse 13. If you haven't watched them you are really missing out.

I can't believe I forgot to mention that one. That was a really good show with some great acting.

Not to mention Joanne Kelly and Jamie Murray were some of the hottest chicks on Syfy. It's an added bonus haha.

Watched the first 2 episodes. Does it quit being boring at some point? Seems like a standard crime drama, but in space, and the space part doesn't even seem that necessary. Like, with a few tweaks, you could easily set it in current times in Chicago or something.

I vote for Star Trek. It overcame bad FX and terrible acting with great, imaginative stories. Without it, none of the later great shows would exist and everything would be like Lost in Space.

I haven’t seen the shows mentioned in this thread so far so I can’t compare, but the best sci-fi show I’ve ever seen was the reboot of BSG.

You have to wait until season 2 if the crime drama part doesn't catch you. That's where I was and the board swore it got better so I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. Season 1 is the crime drama and a lot of set up. Season 2 the show shifts to political drama, earth vs. mars vs. the belt and it really picked up IMO. Season 3 was awesome.

I've tried The Expanse more than once because it seems like I show I would like, and I cannot get past the first few episodes.

You can't rightly name a show that difficult to like the GOAT of SciFi.

I was the exact same - muscled through them and it just takes off - imagine the intense scene in interstellar where he is trying to redock

That is seasons 2 and 3 - pretty much the entire time.

It's because it is world building off of novels. It takes a little time to get a flavor of the characters and context - like Mad Men, but then it's all action and drama. The first few episodes are like the seed of a huge journey.

I've never heard of anyone getting past the first few episodes and not rating it in the GOAT area.

Season 2 had one of the best episodes of any show I have ever seen.

Season 3 is just balls to the wall.

Season 4 is great but it is kinda setting up season 5/book 5 and Amos' backstory.
