EXCLUSIVE: The Last Kingdom is to ride out for a final time, as Netflix brings the curtain down on the beloved adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling The Saxon Stories novels.
The streaming giant and producer Carnival Films confirmed that Season 5 of The Last Kingdom will be the last, bringing an end to a historical drama that originally started life on the BBC six years ago.
Filming is underway in Hungary on the final 10-part season, which will continue to follow the adventures of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), a warrior born a Saxon but raised as a Dane, in ninth and tenth-century England.

I am so sad. This show is great. Why would the stop production? I'm guessing it is very expensive to shoot. but damn it is really good.

I may be in the minority, but I'm glad. In the age of the ability to binge a whole season of a show, it's forced writers to tighten up story arcs and have an epic overarching arc that runs through the series. That didn't used to be the case. Bonanza was just a singular story every week, usually with a guest of the week. And it went on and on until it fizzled.
The line from Stand By Me "Wagon Train's a really cool show, but have you ever noticed they don't really get anywhere? They just keep on wagon-training." is no joke.
Give me 5 solid seasons with mini arcs and a great overarching story arc that you wrap up well at the end, and I'm overjoyed.

Sad but I think it’s a good call IMO.
I love the books too but eventually it just gets super repetitive and then unrealistic.
A: eventually these POS English kings and lords would trust Uhtred since he’s saved the kingdom 1000X even when you all want him dead
B: at this point in the books the dude is like 70 years old and still fighting in battles, he should’ve died like 20 years ago based on the lifestyle he lives and the time period he’s in
C: they’re no longer historical fiction but straight fiction, basically no real historical characters in the books (they’re all dead like he should be), and the battles he’s fighting are now totally made up as well
So the books are awesome, show is awesome, but they’re making the right decision finding an end for the show IMO

I'm 100% behind you. I really love it when writers and producers are able to know when they have reached the end of the road and manage to wrap up a multi-season show in a satisfying and definitive way.

Will still be younger than his children, their children, and the Queens childrens, children.
This series had promise, and it went South

what a terrible take, so what they’re supposed to recast Uhtred because he ages like a regular person?
They realize they can’t keep it going without it getting silly so they’re ending it

It’s like 24. Y’all really think Jack Bauer is a double agent after he did this shite 5 times?

We watched this and then went back and watched Vikings. Currently on the later seasons.
Which one do you guys think is better? The way they talk in the vikings is irritating. The production values seem higher in The Vikings. The characters seem better in The Last Kingdom--thinking of Alfred, in particular.
The women in the Vikings were smoke shows. Lagertha, Siggy, and Helga all had STROOONG eyeliner game. So many good looking women in Vikings.

Hate to see it go. It’s one of my favorite book series and have enjoyed the tv series. My only real regret is the passing of Alfred. The interaction between Dreymon and Dawson was perfect tv. It’s too bad they didn’t make more seasons with Alfred and Uhtred before moving on.

Vikings fell off hard once they shifted focus to Ragnar’s sons. I really liked the first few seasons though.
That said, I think The Last Kingdom is better even compared to early Vikings. The production value and action sequences in The Last Kingdom are definitely better. I think both have fairly compelling plots (again, thinking about earlier seasons of Vikings) but Vikings is a lot more random. Which makes sense when you consider the source material - The Last Kingdom was adapted from a series of novels, while Vikings was adapted from various Norse sagas about Ragnar Lothbrok. The overall arc in Vikings is just really awkward.
I liked Ragnar Lothbrok as a character more than Uhtred. He felt more like a real person, while Uhtred feels like a caricature at times. But it’s not enough.

There are some smoke shows in The Last Kingdom too, though. Plus their tits come out.
