Agreed he is the only hero. I don't really think they are trying to make us hate him though. Despite the jail time, i do think he would have had a bigger funeral had he not went and lived in obscurity. The guy still had decades (?) of heroic works I'm assuming. Just don't go live in the one town that hates you.
This episode confirms John's mom is essentially the villain. Not a character the show was trying to make likable. Hell even John can't stand her. Worst parents of all time.
Completely forgot Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern. I'm assuming he was Green lantern in the Superman movie? Weird seeing him as a super hero, don't really know how to put it but he does not seem like a super hero actor.
John's mom is a villain. I don't get into it with my uber-socially-conscient friends, but the writers are doing a disservice to John and African-Americans with that character.
Nathan Fillion has voiced multiple heroes including Hal Jordan and portrayed semi-serious superheroes in live action, including Guy in Superman. This episode was him taking a comedic character from Superman and giving him enough edge to fit in with this super-serious series. I think he did a great job. They tweaked his hair to make him appear less ridiculous.
When Hal mentioned "that gym teacher" I chuckled hard. That was Guy's original career in the comics. :)

+1 he feels really awkward in this show. The character doesn't fit this grounded world.

Yeah he was GL in the Superman movie. He really plays Guy Gardner perfectly tbh. Absolutely embodies that character completely.

Seems too coincidental to me that his mom called John to go visit Hal the same day that Hal gets murdered. She may be working with whomever did that in an attempt to get John to accept the ring, which has clearly always been her goal. If that's the case, she succeeded. She clearly has no qualms with violence, so it would make sense.
If that's the route they go, it could potentially redeem the absolutely ridiculous DEI episode from earlier in the season. Now that I put it that way, I'm pretty sure that's not where we're going with this.

And Guy hasn't had enough on-screen time for his ring's charge to be a plot point. If you had an entire Guy solo film or series, I assure you it would come up at some point, as it does in the comics.

Race is a part of John's story, so you just have to accept we'll get some dialogue like that from time to time. It's silly to most of us, but for a certain audience, it works fine.

I will say that the watch-girl's laughing response to John "lol we arent racist, we just hate you"
was a nice change of pace. Idk if the writers intended it to come off the way it did but i breathed a sigh of relief when she responded that way.

F bombs... that's HBO trying to keep the "mature audience" tag
Black man in Nebraska... the race angle has been over the top all season, now someone in the show is calling it out.
I actually think they're going there. It felt like they might, but nobody thought they'd have the balls to do it. But now I am pretty certain they are going to do so. DEI crowd will lose their shite, if they do.
He said that and the girl rolls her eyes; we aren't racis, first 2 reasons are good through.
