"But most of all, because I'm a black man in fricking rural Nebraska."
It's always dumb.

Man, I think it's getting pretty clear that they're building towards the "racism" not being an issue.

Yeah, I get that. You want to know the quickest way to make it a non-issue? Don't put none of that crap in the show to begin with. Tell a story without relying on the same old tired plot crutch.

When I said non-issue, I meant racism was some internal excuse he's been clinging to.

I think the story is that he has to stop being that way.

And for the record, that isn't a plot crutch, it's actually saying the opposite of what the DEI crowd says.

It's something I'm surprised Kaiju etc isn't actively praising, because for once, the message isn't "racism against the black man", it's "the black man needs to stop using the race card blaming others, and take responsibility for himself".

Isn't that what we want someone to say?

If that's the route they go, it could potentially redeem the absolutely ridiculous DEI episode from earlier in the season

A revelation that John's parents are still scheming to get him the ring would not be a surprise to most people watching this show, as John's parents have been exclusively depicted as manipulative, morally compromised, and wholly unsympathetic. With the intervening years, John now accepts this, which is why he's made so many strides to cut them out of his life.

It absolutely is a crutch. It's the same old black trauma bs they always make movies about. They can put a little different spin on it if they want, but it adds nothing to a show and most people wouldn't miss it. Just tell a super hero story.

I'm not Kaiju. How is what you think he might think relevant to anything I've said? This isn't conversation by proxy.

A "different spin"? WTF? They're saying it's NOT racism, in case you're missing it. The girl laughs and says "we hate you for what you did, same as Hal". The white sheriff has been his ally. All the "whitey keeping the brother down" stuff has been FALSE the entire way through the show, with everyone picking up on that.
Even John is tired of it, as he's sick of both his parents.

I'm posting on a forum thread, not just responding to you.

Kaiju's been in this thread, and the race/DEI issue is something he's been locked on for awhile. And frankly, while he does get tiresome at times, he's also right about it a good bit too.

To Kaiju, - asking for your reaction. We do see too much DEI in movies and TV.
If HBO flips the script and says "quit playing the race card, it makes you look like a dumbass"; isn't this exactly what we want to see?
I remember some idiots praising Mama on earlier episodes, they're going to lose their fricking minds if the show goes that way.

Did you miss the part where I said I get it and none of that shite needs to be in the show? Do we have to be lectured to about race constantly? "Oh, but this time they're saying it's not racism." How about stfu instead. Why isn't that an option?

Well, you did respond to me, and then asked me to speculate about what another poster would say, then asked about what we would want someone in the show to say. Who is this "we" you're talking about? You got a turd in your pocket? You can't speculate about what another poster thinks and then say I'm part of this imaginary "we" you created. I haven't agreed to anything.

ok now about the show

and to clarify, this is posted to the board, open to everyone participating, not just to whoever I replied to-

1st off, Carol Ferris appearing, means we ain't getting sexy Star Sapphire. Carol's old now. Boo hiss.

2nd, I'm still thinking Hal is going to be alive at the end of this season. Either this dead guy wasn't Hal but instead a decoy,

or John and the hologram will use some alien tech to revive him. If that's the case... a big potential issue is that the alien tech could restore tissue but with the gunshot scrambling his brain, you lose "Hal", the memories and personality. I think you bypass that with the hologram- it's supposedly a "backup" that should be done weekly, in the event something happens to a GL, according to earlier episode. Hal didn't make a backup for 10 yrs (now 20). Maybe he hasn't felt like overwriting that backup for a reason, that it was the last good version of him?

I guess the Guardians, if nobody else, could build a new body and "install" the backup to it. And with Sinestro now free, the Guardians might decide they need Hal back in the game.

GL doesn’t stand for Green Lanterns it stands for gaslighting. This show is the most warped, immoral, disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. It’s pure evil

Wow, you got me.

You win, ok? Take your victory lap.

Now, most forums where people discuss things, there is an option to just "post", instead of only responding to someone. Not the case here, but until this moment I'd never run into someone who couldn't accept that not every part of a post wasn't directed solely to the post I used to make a reply.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out why this is getting so fricking hostile and argumentative, when we're (in theory) just trying to discuss a show...

A bit harsh.

It isn't the show I expected, I'm still thinking there are some things to be addressed by the end of the season. Looks like John gotta shed his racism/victim card in order to grow into the Green Lantern he's eventually going to be.
I agree it's not the Guardians and superheroes I expected, not sure I care for the Guardian being so manipulative and shady. But I also think that's intentionally a subplot designating that particular Guardian as a villain, and not the whole group. Or, at least I hope so.

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) was my favorite comic book hero growing up, so I'm definitely disappointed that they chose to shite on him, and holding out a little hope that it's a misdirection that gets corrected. So far, there's been enough nuggets here and there to suggest it might. If not, this will suck. The movie pissed me off too, I had hoped that would have been good (instead of being maybe the worst of the modern superhero movies).

As for it being evil/disgusting etc, there's a lot of crap that makes you roll your eyes in it. But most of that is laid on so heavily that you start to see it's intentional, and then the show starts to deconstruct that. The racist angle being a prime candidate, when it popped up everyone was like WTF is this. Then Mama really went into it hard, but also Mama was portrayed as a totally unlikeable person. They show her doing horrible things to John, and in-show John starts to hate her. She's "Bernadette", not "Mom". After awhile you figure out, Bernadette's just full of shite, and by extension so is what she's pushing.

If they DON'T follow through and refute all that earlier racist shite as the garbage we know it was, then yeah, I do agree it becomes disgusting. But again, the show has been giving me vibes for a couple episodes that all the racist comments have been incorrect and ignorant.

Correct. It would make sense. That's why I said:

They definitely aren't going that route.

I'm not trying to win anything and there's no hostility. Maybe next time don't toss out another poster not involved in the immediate discussion and then try to present the idea that we all agree on something you defined poorly. Does that make sense? No, "we" aren't inclined to think that the messaging of the black dude getting his race card rejected is better than whitey is bad. I said none of that, I clearly stated that it's just a variation of the same tired race themes Hollywood likes to lecture people about. It's divisive nonsense, it does nothing for the story.

It’s what they’re going. This inverted morality that’s been going on for a couple of years now. Robin Hood, Acolyte, Iron Heart etc... All shows where the protagonist and the themes of the movie are pro evil and actual morality or heroism are depicted as bad.

Like I said, let's see where this ends up. To me, it simply feels like it's setting up for John to rise above the pettiness and flaws he shows.

They keep putting out shitty messages, and then have him reflect on that and reject them. He's rejected a lot of what his parents pushed him to do, now we're starting to address the racial bullshite some.

They had him despise Hal, to the point where the last time he sees him, he punches him in the face. But then when they want to burn the body and dump the ashes down the toilet, he thinks on that and says no, he deserves a funeral and burial. Did he do that just to get the ring? You can say yes, but he already had the ring at the end of last episode, and refused it. I don't think he dug him up JUST for the ring, or he wouldn't have invoked the hologram I don't think. Again you could say it's to get the lantern, but the Guardian could have set him up with that last episode. He wants to figure out what happened to Hal and why.

I get the feeling John's going to learn the only relevant colors are Green (strength of will) and Yellow (fear), and the rest is all unimportant noise.
To that end, I'm noticing the Lanterns title splash screen is still mostly yellow, not green. They're doing that on purpose, there's still a lot of fear in play here. I'm betting that will finally turn green at the end, let's see what the show does for that. That should tell us where they are going with this.

oh yeah, I like Earl. If nothing else, I want to see how he ends up.

Is Green Lantern this “gritty” in the comics? It’s like if Tyler Sheridan adapted a comic. A couple of episodes have been really good but something just feels off about the entire series. It might be because none of the superhero’s are likeable. And why would Hal agree to serve time? Why not just peace out?
