I don't have to retcon anything. Comics have long leaned toward socially conscious themes and ideals people like you would consider "woke garbage". Which isn't surprising at all when you consider they're mostly made by nerdy artist types.
So anybody watching a TV show based on a comic that's surprised or upset they'd tackle issues like racism or social justice is an idiot. If you don't like it, don't watch.
Also you have no idea what any of my beliefs are or in what direction they lean.

Ellison's decisions have no bearing on the fate of this show. It's content, and folks who subscribe to the streaming service might be on board, for now, but it's a garbage show.

I’m just now watching this episode three and LOLOLOL this script is straight from 2020

If you thought you were supposed to cheer for that family, you should probably watch the episode again. Maybe lower the settings on your idiot-vision goggles.
Race is a big part of this episode, yes. But the audience has not been asked to empathize with this black family, who are portrayed in this episode as antagonsts. Even the brothers. We are being asked to empathize with John Stewart, who even though he had a family, is emotionally distant from them.
The mom implies Hal doesn't have fear because he's white, but the audience already knows he was a drunk who felt like he had nothing, including family, to lose. John does have a family, but he's been conditioned by that family to not carr about losing them. Even the "nice" moment with the mom can (and I think should) be read as further strategizing for "the path."
There is no "whitey bad" in this episode; there is "Hal Jordan is a dick" because of his insecurities, which has been a throughline since the start.
This season is likely investigating this question of "Are you afraid?" One, the question is flawed. Two, most everyone we're spending time with is afraid. Hal is afraid of being replaced. The Guardians are afraid of Hal. John's family is acting out of fear.

This is a trend recently where what a normal person perceives as evil the writers perceive as good. Been going on for a few years now but morals don’t exist to them anymore. You’re either marked or you’re not and that’s what determines where you fall on their morality scale regardless of what you do.

The overweight, black lady who wrote this episode herself said that Hal stole the ring from John Stewart Senior specifically suggesting that as a white man he won’t be afraid of anything because of his privilege.
