Forever. It's been a thing since the start of tv production. Having the same director for a whole season or limited series is very rare and always has been. A single director makes episode production less efficient and thus more expensive.

The problem isn't directors exclusively, but more so the writers and even actors who themselves mock the source material.
If it was popular enough as is to warrant a fan base, so much so that it got the attention of a studio, then why in the ever loving hell would they decide THEY know more than the fans or can do better than the established POPULAR lore? Because on top of having the innate desire to 'do their own thing', current day Hollywood types are compelled to insert their own agenda. And not just as a subtle underlying theme, but instead they insist on beating everyone over the head with it and then pat themselves on the back for being sooooo bold!
The fans are fricking OVER it.

This. I can handle a few eye rolls during anything, whether they're caused by politics, plot holes, lazy editing, whatever. I just don't want to see any of those consistently because it stops being entertaining.

It was annoying 25 yrs ago when Joss Whedon did his 'activism' during a Buffy episode , but it was done so subtly and if you blinked, you missed it. In one scene, there was a Dixie Chicks poster on some girl's dorm room wall. This was during their comments about W while touring overseas. That was it. No long winded lectures, no virtue signaling subplot to scold the fans for wrongthink... just a few seconds of screen time and the story never took a detour.
Now? A man being passed over for being afraid is woven into the very fabric of the show and the cast are supposed to cheer and applaud at every turn for how brave and bold a statement it made!
*Why the DV? What did I say which you disagreed with? What was inaccurate? Are you cranky that I can recall a incident from a BTVS episode? Does that go against you " you only know what youtubers tell you, you never watch ANYTHING" narrative?

I think HBO just can't help themselves. See WATCHMEN- built around a race riot in Tulsa, while nothing was touched on regarding this in Alan Moore's OG series. It's like "let's do a take on Watchmen, but let's throw in racism because"

Yes, there's a lot of that, but the show is doing well. There are fans out there that are fine with this type of stuff, or they just don't care.

The watchmen series was critically acclaimed and won many awards. It only got one season. Don’t be shocked if this follows that same path.

Im glad i quit reading comics before all this garbage. Hal Jordan was the only green lantern that I recall when I was into comics. Comics may have always been political, but as a kid, i read for the superheroes and good vs bad, not sociopolitical commentary.

HBO wanted another season, Lindelof only had it as a one season show the whole time. He told them they could keep going if they wanted but he was done because he felt it had the ending he wanted. Regina King said she wouldn't return unless Lindelof did so they didn't get another writer.
With Gunn behind this one I can definitely see them going more than one season even if Lindelof only wants to do one like Watchmen.
Edit: Lantern has almost 10x the viewership of Watchmen too so HBO will probably push for more.

Ratings for Lanterns are far stronger. I have no clue if it gets renewed. We have to wait and see what Ellison decides to do, but it's performing well so far

I started buying comics when i was about 6 or 7 back in 1978. Probably couldn't read but i liked the pictures. I quit around 1982 or 1983. I still have nostalgia for superheroes. Like I said, I'm sure they were always political, but a kid doesn't notice things like that.
Also, being patriotic in the 70s and 80s was not controversial to me as a kid.
