The complete sh*show of Superman in the last 20 years proves how good Smallville was

Obviously, talking about live action. DC animated has been fantastic.

While I liked MOS, I get why some don't care for it. Superman Returns wasn't great and wasn't terrible, but that in and of itself is the problem. Gunn's Superman (and Supergirl) are there, and that's it.

But Smallville was great. It captured the lore/mythos of the characters while worldbuilding in a way that set the table the super MAN Clark would become.

Curious what you thought of Krypton. I loved the show and wish there was more. The Lobo episode was my favorite.

Have never seen it, so can't speak to it.

Read this and thought it would be the Annette O’Toole pool scene from Cat People. :(

Like others, I really enjoyed the series, and I got into it late. So the series ended about five years before I would start it. Well done and most episodes were really good. Tempted to test their replay value instead of trying to watch the new Superman stuff.

Superman Returns was ok, but really unnecessary. If Man of Steel was on its own for modern Superman movies, I'd say one is plenty. Just flooding the market with movie after movie with the same character(s) is so uninspiring.

Does it actually age well? I've never watched it. Felt it looked too high school drama-like.

It does age pretty well. Some of the special effects can look dated, but considering it was on the WB (to become the CW) in early 2000s, they're pretty good. It has some teenage high school drama because the first 4 years are when they are in high school and, again, CW.

Still, despite all that, you have some damned good storytelling and character development. The show was so good that an original character became canon (Chloe Sullivan) and they greatly elevated an obscure existing character (Lionel Luthor - played excellently by John Glover).

It was 10 seasons long with 217 episodes. There were some clunkers and some fillers, but the vast majority were very good and some of them were great. It has a 7.5/10 rating on IMDB and 78% on RT. It is almost universally recognized as the father of the Arrowverse.

I also want to add that Superman & Lois is another live-action Superman from the last 20 years that absolutely does not suck.

How would the board rank Lois and Clark? I was only 10 when it came out, but my mom and sister were obsessed with it (sister had a giant Dean Cain poster).

Wife and I have been thinking of picking up Smallville after our Buffy/Angel re-watch. She's watched some of it but I never really did.

Lois & Clark is my go to watch if I’m ever home from work with illness. It was on when I was around 11-12 and the portrayal of Clark’s values and Superman’s unshakeable honor really helped to form who Superman is to me and, honestly, who I strive to be as a man.

I know that sounds hyperbolic but it’s true.

Also, to me, the best Lois (and I loved Smallville as well).

Mostly

It is a lot of that, but a lot about Clark learning to be Superman

The relationship between Lex and Clark alone is worth it

Michael Rosenbaum remains my prototype Lex Luthor. Nobody did it better.

Lionel Luthor as the general antagonist was really good

Which he was fine with at the time, but regrets now.

His and Michael's podcast (Talkville) is great.
