I don't smoke pot and love the movie.
I can definitely agree with the others. The first time I watched this movie I was definitely laboring through it. It was so bizarre and meandering I had no idea what was going on and was no sure what to make of the ridiculous characters.
I watched it again, and it got better. My second time watching it I noticed the Dude repeats shite he hears all the time. "This agression will not stand" -- he heard on TV at the supermarket, for example.
A few more viewings, and I notice the despite how clueless the dude is, the one thing he does 100% know in this movie is where the In-n-Out burger in Radford street it. Thats all. You never hear him say anything else with such absolute certainty.
Every time I watch I catch something else. Sure, the characters are neurotic and the story is confusing, but its a hell of a movie.
You said it man!

Despite the hate/indifference in this thread, I have no shame in saying that The Big Lebowski is my favorite film of all time. The humor is so perfectly dry, and the film is expertly directed. Even if you don't think it's funny, how can you not see the genius in the dream sequences? And there's so many genius little touches in the film. Watch the first scene in his bathroom: he's got a roll of toilet paper on the holder that's empty with a mostly full roll on top of the toiled. It's such a frequent thing you'll see in a batchelor pad, but you never see things like that in film.
And to the person saying Bridges was poorly cast:
That part could NOT have been portrayed better by anyone.

It is terrible by any standard and even worse compared to the good movies made by those guys.
You better be glad we live in a country where burning flags and saying this is OK!
I kid, but I don't get how you can say this.
Maybe you never inhaled, because if you did, you'd have friends like TD that you remember with fondness.

I don't like your jerk off name. I don't like your jerk off face. I don't like your jerk off behavior, and I don't like you. Jerk-off. Do I make myself clear?
I do think it's overrated from the standpoint of Coen brothers - I rank it middle of the pack of their movies. But that still makes it great. I do think Raising Arizona is much finnier, but Raising Arizona is the funniest movie ever made. Yeah, I said it.

It was unanimously a funny and great movie to all friends and family members. Everyone talked about it like it was a masterpiece.
And you went in expecting that. That's why you felt unimpressed.

quote:I just expect good movies from them. The ones I mentioned are movies I've seen over 10 times each. I cannot not watch them when i see them on. TBL is among the worst movies I've ever seen. It's terrible.

The funniest part of this thread is - there are people here who think I've offended them because i don't like a movie

How many times have you watched the movie?

if you dont laugh at the substory of the nihilists and the Jackie Treehorn enterprise then i absolutely feel sorry for your lack of humor.
There are a minimum of a 5 of my most hated posters in this thread. Its no surprise they are either all trolling, or genuinely dont like the movie. Either way, i wish for them to have their privates yanked off by trucks.
