He strikes me as a stolen valor kinda guy.

He’s based on John Milius, who apparently never served, but is also kind of a big mouth macho guy. So, it’s possible.

No.
But he liked to think he was.

That’s how I feel about it. He was making it all up.

For what it’s worth, I doubt the Dude does background checks on his friends, so I don’t think anyone close to Walter has ever verified his record.
The movie came out in 1998 when Goodman was 46. But it takes place in 1991. So, Walter would have been born circa 1945. In 1965 there were something like 2.6 million active duty personnel in the military total…not counting reserves and National Guard.
So it seems hard to believe that someone like Walter wasn’t in someway part of that 2.6 million. Whether he actually went to Vietnam, I suspect he was embellishing his service record.

Yea he created the tough guy image to cover up the fact that he probably never landed on Vietnam soil.
I will give it to him… he’s committed to the lie.

See the Dude’s reaction… he knows Walter is full of shite and he gets more and more fed up with it as the movie goes on.

He didn’t watch his buddies die face down in the muck so you could question his integrity on TD!

He knows that Nam was a "no rules" kind of place, unlike bowling.

Hard to believe Goodman wasn’t nominated for BSA at the 98 Oscars.

Was the Dude really an heir to the Rubik's cube inventor?

It was never said but he definitely lived like a trustafarian.

A prequal movie of walter during Vietnam would be great.
I imagine it:
- starting with him worried about the rise of communism in southeast Asia and how that cannot stand. him really gung ho about it.
- Walter getting drafted and reality setting in that he is could be in danger and freaking out.
- Walter before shipping off to boot camp, trying to figure out a way out. changing religions, trying to get into school, faking health issues, etc. Walter failing miserably at his ruse to get out of the military.
-Walter in boot camp, struggling, meeting his buddies, then right as he gets to Nam, getting some kind of ridiculous injury/illness that ends up with him being shipped out of the war, never having been in any kind of harms way.
-ends with him winding up in a bowling alley. The dude is there maybe they don't know each other yet or maybe they do. Donnie is also there, but is being hassled by some tough guys, walter "will not stand for that agression" steps in and saves Donnie, beginning their friendship.
Walter goes from fake tough guy, to learning how to be tough, to defending those who can't defend themselves.

I got the feeling he would have been one of the guys who joined the National Guard to avoid the draft, or would have been a cook in Okinawa or something.
