So it seems hard to believe that someone like Walter wasn’t in someway part of that 2.6 million. Whether he actually went to Vietnam, I suspect he was embellishing his service record.

I'd guess the most likely scenario is he spent a few months loading planes on a base far away from any action.

He was ready to throw down and fight when the nihilists tried to rob them though so he's not necessarily all talk either.

Yes, he was in Vietnam.. he mentions it like 8 different times in the film.

A prequal movie of walter during Vietnam would be great.

John Goodman is too old to play Walter in a prequel unless they want to use that wonky new technology they used in the Irishman... and he's the only person who should ever play Walter

I got the feeling he would have been one of the guys who joined the National Guard to avoid the draft, or would have been a cook in Okinawa or something.
My dad lucked out during the Korean conflict by spending his two years in the Army being an MP in Hawaii.

One of his duties was taking U.S. Army prisoners on ships to San Francisco. Some other MP took them to Leavenworth. He said he never had any The Last Detail (1973) weekends, but he did get to spend weekends with leave in Francisco, after he turned his prisoner over.

This is what I always thought. He probably went to Vietnam but never came close to any action

Obviously.

I’d go low budget and cast a bunch of young actors that are super hungry.

For the most part, I don't think it matters. The characters of The Dude and Walter are symbolic. Walter is right-wing, jingoistic and capitalistic. The Dude is a leftist revolutionary Marxist. But, they're essentially best friends (insofar as they have close friends). Donnie is sort of "the middle" or the broad moderate space in between. Notice that Donnie is out of his "element" when discussing their topic du jour, because all he does is roll strikes (Donnie rolls strikes all but once, IIRC). Donnie is literally killed when he's caught up in some nonsensical conflict of the other 2. (Has to be a metaphor in there, somewhere.)

The Dude is based on Jeff Dowd and Walter is based on John Milius. Jeff Dowd was actually one of the Seattle Seven and produced things like Oliver Stone's Zerbrahead, while Milius actually did shite like write Dirty Harry and Apocalypse Now and made films like Conan and Red Dawn. While The Dude was (also?) a member of the Seattle Seven, I don't think it is a requirement for Milius to have been in Vietnam for Walter to be a legit veteran.

They're more archetypes than literal historical figures. The "Big" Lebowski represents the prior generations (The GI/Greatest Generation and Silent Generation). The Dude, Walter and Donnie represent different political "wings" of the Boomers.

I like to imagine that Donnie and Walter had a really kind friendship, but we just happen to witness their relationship in a very stressful two weeks.

Doesn’t The Dude actually call him out at one point and tell him he wasn’t in Nam?

Not really. He calls out Walter for making a non-First Amendment issue a First Amendment issue and a non-Vietnam issue a Vietnam issue.

Excellent gifs to use when a non-political thread gets derailed by a political discussion.
