Yeah. I thought it was interesting the way they showed it from their perspective. Someone that grew up with the Soviet way of thinking could easily assume that. Our differences in the way things were done probably made for faulty assumptions from both sides and got us closer to WW3 than anyone would really like to think more often than anyone would really like to think.
Definitely. Great episode.

Great episode.
The Al Haig "I'm in control of the government" was a fricking shitstorm when it happened and that was in the days of three networks and no internet/Twitter/24 hour news/bloggers/etc.
It would be like if Obama or Bush were shot and Biden/Cheney were on Air Force One and Hilary Clinton or Condeleeza Rice had gotten in front of the country and said "I'm in charge of the government".
Now, the other party would take to the airwaves and internet and lose their minds. Back then we had to worry about how folks with nukes would react.
I love seeing old school spycraft as it used to be - without all the tech we have now, it was crazy the lengths spies had to go to.
Really enjoying this series - hope FX gives it a shot to go on for a while despite the low ratings.

Haig's general background had to have freaked them out when he said he was in control.

It"s not getting good ratings?
That sucks. People just want brainless tv instead of good shows like this don't they?

I hope the ratings are good enough for cable.

The ratings dropped a good bit from the premiere episode, but supposedly those numbers were boosted quite a bit when they took into account DVR numbers. Be a shame if this only gets one season.

I love this show. I wonder if the creators spoke with former KGB agents?

Yep - I had only read an article about the ratings dropping big from episode one to episode two, but it looks like when they figured in the Live/+3 DVR viewers, the show actually gained viewers.
So that's great. Truly, using the outdated Neilsen ratings in today's fragmented audience is really a load of crap.
Seems like "The Americans" is matching and may exceed the ratings of "American Horror Story".
If the show can get some traction during awards season, then it's a "hit" by the standards of cable.

The creator is a former CIA officer so I'm sure he's very familiar with their methods.
Three things about tonight:
I don't have any firsthand knowledge of this shite (obviously,) but I'm a bit of a cold war buff, I guess you'd say. From what I know of the Soviets, they wouldn't let a low level amateur go off on her own like that. There were rules, which were strictly adhered to. The fact that she even made a suggestion like that would have been a huge red flag, even moreso than was shown in the scene. So they followed her to the bar, but they didn't go in. How did they know who she might have been talking to inside?
When they're scouting their targets, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be carrying a sniper rifle around until it's time for the real thing. Dramatic license, I guess.
Stan told Phil and Liz about Hinckley. It doesn't seem likely that an FBI agent would tell a couple of casual neighbors about an ongoing, high profile investigation. And later on, his wife complains he doesn't talk to her, so it's out of character for him personally. We already know his spidey sense were tingling about them. I wonder if this is his way of sending a message to Moscow that they can stand down. I'm probably overthinking this, but I thought it was interesting.
I love this show, don't get me wrong. I'm just a habitual nitpicker.

I've thought it was strange several times how forthcoming he is about his job to neighbors he just met.

How about Elizabeth taking out the security guard without batting an eye. She's got an icy streak.

I think they show that as he's willing to talk to these people he barely knows yet he and his wife are practically strangers now

Yeah that caught me off guard. Stone cold.

Once he didn't find a body in their trunk they must look like pretty good people compared to the white supremacists he was recently living with.

I think it's also part of what he was saying about him trying to fit in and act how his wife wants him to.

I just started watching this show with this episode. Have they ever addressed why the KGB agents do not speak with a Russian accent or was voice training part of their overall training?

It was part of their training. They didn't focus on that specifically, but there was a scene in the pilot that let you know they were always practicing not speaking with a Russian accent.

And if you listen closely, you can hear Philip pronounce things certain words slightly differently once in a while--Matthew Rhys is a native of Wales, so it's merely coincidental, but it goes a long with the story.
I wonder how they explain the lack of grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, to their kids.

Wouldn't be too hard to come up with a plausible scenario.

I think when they have that marathon next Friday a lot of people will jump on it after they're able to see it all from the jump. I know of 4 people just in my circle that's all said they forgot it was coming on and they've only seen the second or third episode and they really want to catch up. God I hope this show doesn't get the axe.
