Wouldn't be too hard to come up with a plausible scenario.
Yeah, and the kids probably go along with it now. When they get older, they'll probably think about it more and start to get curious. Maybe this will be addressed if the show lasts long enough. Two only children whose parents died young, meet and marry. Maybe they were even both adopted as infants. Okay, I could buy that. But in the former case, where are the family photos, trips back to the old home town, childhood friends, etc? In the latter case, where are the adoption records? I think one of these kids will start wondering.
ETA: and what happens if their curiosity starts to jeopardize the mission?

If there are no relatives, why go back?

To show the kids where you grew up?
I'd be interested in my roots, and if there were no roots, I'd start to wonder why. Maybe they will address this in future episodes.

I would think they tell their kids they are orphans and the area they're in now is the only place they've ever really known. Or that their moms and dads died at a young age. It seems like that's something that was squashed long ago in their cover.

It would suck if this show got cancelled, its great. I've talked a few people into picking it up recently as well, and they all like it.

Good news!
@sepinwall: RT @JohnSolbergFX: FX has picked up The Americans for a second season.

Nice. That means they'll have a good story arc and they won't have to pussyfoot around at the end of the season with will they/won't they BS.

I was already having a good day, but that news makes it even better. I haven't liked a show this much since Friday Night Lights, and it took me way more than 4 episodes to truly love FNL.
The pilot to the Americans is hands down the best I have ever seen, and the past three episodes have been excellent as well. Not a single bad development yet.

Did anybody else notice the hard, cold look "Claudia" gave Elizabeth as she drove off from their meeting?

Yeah, I wasn't sure if that was meant to be foreshadowing towards her feelings towards her or if Claudia was just stressed out from the Soviet escalation.
