The captain was ridiculous. Every time something went remotely wrong she turned into a blubbering bafoon. Crying and shite all over the place. I’m pretty sure the captain on a mission like that is a stone cold robot. Like straight up,

we’re going to die? Ok let’s solve problems then.

Not oh my gawd?!?!? I can’t tell the crew?!?!? Arghghgh!! How’d we screw up?!?!? Ahhhh

Could they not have turned around and head back to earth once they realized the mission was going to be a failure?

No. Video of space YouTuber who was a consultant for the movie explaining why they couldn’t turn around. Start at 8:10

Let’s not ever refer to Anna as the girl from Pitch Perfect. Thanks.

That movie had a bleak ending, but as bleak as it was on the surface, if you think about it, it’s even darker than that. Ultimately, that surviving crew is going to Mars, and wasting two years of their lives for nothing.
I disagree. I thought the ending was hopeful - as humans push towards Mars, they retain their humanity in the face of confounding moral dilemmas pertaining to human life.

I agree with the guy that said the set up/details don't really matter that much. All of that is essentially McGuffins to get us to the moral dilemma.

I liked the fact that the immediate response to finding the black guy was "sucks for him that he has to definitely be the one to die."

Captain Janeway would've known what to do with him. (Tuvix)

Kurt Russell would have been perfect for that role.
